My new 1892-S Barber Quarter Got a really nice example of a 1892-S Barber Quarter. I will post the pictures here shortly. has a small dark line (not easy to see on these photos) from where rubberband used to hold a small stack of 2 x 2's. The dark line area goes from around the wreath down to just right of the eye and down to the left side of the lip then the chin. Question. can I use a small amount of soap and water and not rub to hard to try to get this off or should I just leave the coin like it is? Thanks in Advance.
I wouldn't rub your coin at all, but that is just me. It's incredibly easy to scratch a coin believe it or not.
I would try a quick dip in pure acetone first. Otherwise, I personally would leave the coin alone. I don't even like to dip coins in acetone. Wait and see what someone else says please before you do this.
I'm still confused as to why the front is a barber and the reverse is a standing liberty quarter reverse? Or am I just missing something?
Thanks Becky- Not sure if that is Toning. The 2 x 2 holding the coin had the old type plastic which I believed caused the dark line with the rubberband on top of it. The coin is really nice even with that flaw but wouldn't mind trying to get it off if it has a good chance of fixing the problem and doesn't hurt the coin. Craig
Probably because the dummy (that being me) posted the wrong picture. Standby for the right reverse for the 1892-S Barber Quarter. That other reverse is from my 1877 Seated Liberty Quarter.
Thanks for your answer GDJMSP. On the light spot around the 8 o'clock position on the obverse not sure. I don't think it is toning.
