My new 1796 Draped Bust Cent, S-102

The recent Goldberg sale of the March Wells collections had very many choice (and others not so choice, but very rare) varieties of large cents. A deadly trap for people like me who love these coins! I bid on a few 1794's, 1796's and 1795's hoping to get at least one.

In spite of what i considered to be strong bids, over book on R-3 and higher varieties, i did not manage to win even one.......It is as though somebody knew what i was bidding, and continually upped me one! No sign of the difficult economic times at this sale, or maybe it was that people were willing to pay hefty premiums due to the pedigrees. I don't know.

I then chanced to look at what Shawn Yancey was offering. As some of you know, Shawn specializes in this area, and has many nice coppers on offer. There i saw this little lady who now enhances my collection: 1796 Draped Bust S-102, R-4 VG8, with a decent planchet.
S-1-2 is not tremendously rare as a variety, but i think this coin offers a good compromise between rarity and condition. (i already have an S-102 but in AG3/4 condition. This one is much better).

I thought some of you may enjoy seeing this lady from 1796,

    Regards,

    Eduard

I've been up for over an hour and a 1/2.

But, I just got around to going on line.

I wanted to go thru some junk silver for varieties.

and, nope, did not find any.

    next time, I hope.

What a beauty! So is there no presence of any die cracks on the reverse? Can't tell too much from the pictures.

I have yet to acquire any of the 1796 varieties for my collection. :( They are so friggin expensive. :goofer: One of these days, I'm gonna get one and then I'll have 27 more to go for that year. I figure 1796 will be the one year that will take me quite some time to complete, if I ever complete my DBC collection. ;)

    Love it! :thumb:

    Eduard,

I'm glad to see you found Shawn. He carries some very nice coins, and is a joy to work with -- not to mention his return policy is light-years ahead of bidding in an auction. ;)

All that said, that's a wonderful 1796! Congrats on your NEWP....Mike

p.s. Shawn's a great guy, but his pics sure stink! Now that you have one of his coins in-hand, you'll be able to do a better job evaluating his coins from his pictures (which is no small task).

Eduard, you have a knack for spotting 'nice for grade' coins! That's a beauty, thanks for sharing the photos.

Thank you ALL, Ksparrow, Phoenix and Numan for your comments. I Luv these 1796 DBC's!

    H.T, Mark,
I really hope that you guys find some nice examples for your collections. They are out there, and show up regularly on Ebay, so keep your eyes open, but as you say there is some competition to get them. I have now 6 in my collection, all but 1 from Ebay, and
had to bid high to get them. If i see something interesting i will let you know. But knowing you H.T, you are probably 'in-the-know' anyway!

Mike (Leadfoot), i fully agree, Shawn is very good and a pleasure to deal with. This will not be the last coin i get from him. He has so many nice coins, and i think that he would be a good alternative to the big auction houses. (He had 2 1796's and i really had to think hard which one to get). His photos do show copper in a somewhat unnatural "brutal" light, but i trust his descriptions and his judgment as well.

    Thanks all,

    Eduard

Maybe not tremendously rare, but in my opinion there s no such thing as a common 96 draped bust. What I can't figure out is where they all went. Most of th cents struck in the first half of 1796 were actually 1795 cents. Then they struck 109,000 96 caps. In July they switched to the 96 draped bust and they struck three times as many draped bust cents as they did Liberty caps. Yet in the marketplace you only see one draped bust for every ten to twenty 96 caps. You can got to a large show and other than in the copper specialists show you may not find a single 96 bust on the floor.

I do like the 1796 cents. It is an amazingly tough year and unfortunately one which is pretty much impossible to complete. I still lack one piece to havall of the Sheldon numbered varieties for that year. (I have all the caps and only lack the S-96 draped bust.)

Eduard, Are you a member of EAC? If so are you going to report your early dates for the census?

Conder, many thanks for your extensive coments (which for some reason i missed before).
As you say the 1796 DBC is much more difficult to find that the 1796 Liberty Cap cent, in spite of the relatively high mintage figures. Maybe somebody is out there hoarding??
You say you have all the 1796 varieties, just the S-96 missing!!!!!! wow, i would love to see your collection then! You have the NC's as well? man....
To answer your question, i am not a member of the EAC because of the distance (cannot attend the shows and auctions), and also because i always thought my collection was not really up to par. I think i may only have a handful of coins worthy of the CC. I'll think about it.
I have managed to obtain 6 draped busts, and 1 Liberty (S-82). But the only really rare one is my S-105 (R5). That one is really nice.

By the way, the S-102 from Shawn finally got here today, after the obligatory 2 weeks to cross the atlantic + stop at german customs (argh!!!).
Here are my pictures, the ones above were Shawns. His picture is better than mine i think. In-hand, the surface is quite smooth if not perfect, and the level of detail also as one would expect for a nice VG. I am happy with the coin.

Shawn also sent me a copy of CQR (Copper Quotes by Robinson). I don't know how i managed to do without this very useful guide. It is just great i think. So much useful information.

    Regards,
    Ed

Nice coin. I just got into 1796 after completing my 1802 set (no NCs). My copper quotes is from March 31, 1996. Perhaps it's time to update.

    Congratulations!

You must be the one of the guys I'm bidding against. I've gotten 2 unattributed R5s (S-85 and S-86) recently and they are on their way. I've placed good bids on attributed R5s and missed out, usually in the last 10 seconds.

That's a really nice 1796. I don't think it's so much the pedigrees as it is the demand for draped bust large cents these days. It seems to me that the demand for draped bust large cents has really been increasing over the past couple of years. I'm not sure why but collectors can't seem to get enough of them. Especially the pre 1800 dated specimens.

I hadn't realized I had an old thread, but it's still a nice coin.
