My lost mail rant. :dismay: Monday I had my nice new North Ireland set with the Bushmills Distillery depicted on the back arrive at my door. As it was certified mail and I was not at home, the postman left one of those “come and get it” slips in my mailbox. Tuesday comes around and my wife runs to the post office and presents the receipt to the clerk who goes and looks for it. 20 minutes later, the clerk returns saying he can’t find it! They took her phone number and said they’d continue to look for it and call her if they found it. I’m not holding my breath. I think it’s gone. What really irks me though is that It Was At My Door!!! And then went missing. *Sigh* I’ve never heard of a lost item returning to the owner, so I’m certain I’m out of luck. … Well, I guess I remember hearing of a postcard being like 60 years late being delivered, but honestly, I don’t think this will come back. Well, I can’t hold a grudge against the postman, I mean if he was going to steal it, why leave the receipt? No, I think it’s just lost. But man! It was Right There! I might have to request just regular mail in the future if this happens again. It wasn’t exactly cheap, either, but I’ve only heard of horror stories about the USPS taking responsibility in these cases. Next best job to being a weatherman, I suppose. Both the weather and mail are full of mysterious vortexes that can make sunshine and mail change at a moments notice and no one’s to blame. *Sigh* Really though, I'm quite lucky. I've only had three items disappear in the mail ever (that I know of). Considering the amount of banknotes I've had delivered, I'm doing quite well indeed. And heaven knows that I consitently get my junk mail and bills on time and without fail, so they post office is doing ok, I suppose.... But It Was At My Door and I just feel so... so... disappointed? yeah, but I guess I'm still mad, too. I just want to say like Yosemite Sam Said: Rickin Brackin Sassafrackin, Consarn it! And: #@!* And: Jumpin Jesus! Okay I feel better now. Thanks for letting me vent.
I hope for the best. I think it is too early to give up but it is a good mindset to start with (things can only get better). One question- how do you know that you get all the junk mail you should?
A couple of years ago I won a certified $5 gold eagle and had it shipped to my house (it was a rural route with the mailboxes). The postal delivery person accidentally delivered to a house down the street. This person opened it, then cracked open the NGC holder, then gave it back to the delivery person to give to me. I was both appalled and astonished at the same time. I can't believe that they broke open a hard plastic case to get to the gold coin, then just gave it back. Anyway, I tried to file a claim for the certification fees, but that was a lost cause. USPS insurance is a waste of time.
This has happened to me before - several times. In one case the mailman forgot to leave it at the post office. That one they called me the next day. On another one they took my name and number - took them three days to find it. Apparently it went into wrong box in a different area code. So have some patience it might show back up.
I've had expensive items left outside, leaning up against my door, items with "Do Not Bend" folded neatly in half and shoved in the mailbox, and a couple of weeks ago, I found the the "missed you" notice up against my fence (it had blown away from the door latch). In all circumstances all I got was "I'm sorry that happened".
Bad things never happen as a solitary event. Rather it is a culimination of errors, foul-ups, etc that result in negative occurances. As you stated, the Postman would not leave it to get stolen at your door. He returns to the Post Office and sets it aside. Someone else moves it out of the way. Anothers person may move it again to another spot. Now no one knows where it is. I am certain it is behind, below or above something so it isn't seen. I really think they will find this in a day or two. Every Postman really wants to get mail to you, if just to get rid of it. Somebody is going to find it in their way and get it to you. Good luck. gary
That's a great attitude Gary, and will probably make you live a bit longer than some of the more cynical of us Good luck with it Dave, I too am hopeful that the package has just been mislaid somewhere in the piles of stuff at the post office. As you know I had a theft a while back, though, and am not convinced the USPS was completely honest about it. Dave
What I keep wondering is where does that stuff go? It didn't just vanish off the face of the earth so it has to be somewhere. I had a birthday card I mailed to my dad (who only lives about 25 miles away) never arrive. I had a few (thankfully cheap) coins never arrive. I had someone mail me a birthday present that I never got. And this is over the years in a few different locations where I was living. But I've never once had a payment I sent for a bill not show up, or not receive a bill that I was expecting. Is someone stealing the outgoing mail? Every once in awhile you'll hear about authorities finding thousands of pieces of undelivered mail in some postman's house. It makes me wonder.
As most have said, i too believe it will probably pop up in a couple days. I had a coin delivered to my office building. it was shipped in a normal priority mail box with no identifying markers on the outside. The box was delivered and signed for, and then never seen again. It happens from time to time. Good luck on getting your items!
I had a postal money order destroyed when a machine ate my envelope or something, about a week ago. USPS paid for a new money order and postage though, so no biggie.
Well, as a few of you said, I should have more patience.... .... .... All things come to he who waits, right? Well, they found the package, and I got my notes today! Nothing like a little high anxiety once in a while to get your blood going! Hurraaaaayy I'm happyyy!
It's funny how things work. I once received a Birthday card addresses to my house and opened by mistake. It was from a child to an estranged father, but there was no return address or information at all. I turned it to the Postman, but often wondered what happened and how badly feelings were hurt when there was no response ? Father didn't get the card and the child never got an answer. I have sent checks for my utilities that never arrived. TWICE this happened ! Man that is inconvenient for sure. Now I do things differently of course. But when the utility doesn't get the check, they think you stiffed them. Of course, by the time you learn of it, it's a late fee, double billing, etc. Thank goodness it wasn't a creditor. lol
Every lost shipment (2 out of ~2000 over one year) I have had happen to me has had either signature required or an insured package that didn't have the recipient available on the initial delivery. As risky as it seems I prefer that "steal me" tags are not used.
I've had a few things lost in the mail as well. Of course, I never know how long to wait before I assume it's lost with the mail system we have. For instance, just this week I received my Coin World for last week on Tuesday, and then on Thursday I got the firt week of August issue. Go figure! Guy
My worst mail story is not even lost. I have had cases of books left on my doorstep, IN THE RAIN. I am talking about $500-$1000 dollar sets. I don't think they contemplate what may happen when leaving packages out in the open. Thankfully I live in a very quiet, nice neighborhood by a lake so I am not worried about someone taking them, but dang, in the rain....... Luckily either I got home in time or my wife saw them so I was able to retrieve them and unwrap them before any damage was done, (I think).
