I have started a collection of old out of print coin albums, its kind of a combination of book/coin collecting I am actually filling the album up as well, so it combines two passions of mine here is my latest find, i have not received it yet but its on its way. its an old "promo" dansco album of coins from 1941, i plan on filling it except for the proof coins putting proof coins in a push album would be a little scary
not yet, but i am doing a bunch of research on dansco folders/albums and hope to have a web site up with all of the information on out of print/rare dansco albums. If anyone here has any information or owns old dansco albums please contact me!
Neat!--I have seen some old coins albums but none like that....one thing I like to do is buy old books about coins...that have been out of print for a long time.. A collector I know that is in a Nursing home had a great book collection (Breen had signed some of his books) and many of the books had been out of print for 50+ years... The guy that takes care of this money and such sold them all to a book guy for $500--the guy was hopping mad..he said that I was going to get alot of the books and that they were worth a LOT more than $500--I guess there is not much I can do about it...I know the book guy and I wouldn't even let him know I wanted a Coin Book...much more I wouldn't even go in his store... I told my dealer...maybe he will find some of the books and let me get first dibs! Speedy
i have strict instructions with my coins and other numismatic items listing their values and where to sell them if ( god forbid ) something where to happen to me. i HIGHLY recomend that any serious coin collector do the same! I can't wait to get this album, i did not know it existed either, but now i am on the hunt for other dates With my research on the dansco line of albums and folders i think i know more then the employees of dansco by now, i have called them up inquiring about their out of print albums and they had no idea what i was talking about
The bad thing is---this guy could have told the other guy where to sell them and who would give them the best price...but the guy over his money just took them and sold them without telling him... I have never heard of the name of albums either till today! Let us know when it gets to you! Speedy
will do I plan on heading down to the coin store and filling it up with nice circulated coins ( minus the proofs ) I can sit on the porch and pretend its 64 years ago!
Something you're probably aware of, but I'll bring it up anyway. I'm not sure when it became known that sulphur in paper causes toning in coins. Your plan to put in old circulated coins will probably not be a problem, but if you're planning to put in expensive coins, you might want to investigate whether that album has sulphur-free paper.
i am not to concerned with the 41's... i can pick up nice circulated examples for practically "junk silver" cost.... If i DO find any albums for years like 1921 or such i will def. not be putting any coins in the albums one thing to not: many of the coins that have attractive toning and sell for big bucks these days got their toning by being stored in these types of albums... so it may be a good thing!
There is alot of money that could be made off of old people in nursing homes and off of folks who just lost a loved one and a person could make alot of money without breaking laws at least the laws on the books down here. Alot of famous lawyers were also caught over the years for "mishandling assests that they had Power of Attorney over. Don't be surprised if some of those books that were in the bundle that sold for 500 never reached a book seller. I collect books as well and it does not take much to find out about pricing. Nice coin album Ranchhand. Like the pictures that you took.
I was at the used book store the other day, and I was pagin through what they had in terms of coin books, and I came across a bunch of the blue Whitman folders. I'll be darned if the second one I picked up had 20 silver roosevelt dimes still in it! The sticker price was 50 cents, so I think I made a pretty darn good profit! ~AJ
I saw the guy that sold them the other day and he said that he had some boxes of books that were marked for me that he would bring me soon...don't know maybe the books in these boxes are the better ones...maybe he sold the ones that didn't count....at least we can hope. Ranchhand I think I have found a new collection like you have...I'm kindof starting a collection of Coin Auction Catalogs...I found alot at an auctions from the 60's and 70's and it seems like it could be as much fun as collecting coins!!
