i'm so excited! this is the 3rd coin in my edward i penny collection (small, yes, but GROWING!) i got it last week, but couldn't post until now. the dealer knocked off quite a bit for the gash on the obverse. personally, i think it adds character!! hope you enjoy! edward i (1272-1307), penny, 1.33g, class 9a, (1299-1301) london mint obv: facing bust of king, trifoliate crown, +EDW R ANGL DNS HYB rev: long cross with trefoil of pellets in each angle, CIVITAS LONDON
nice, congrats I'd like to get one, if I stumble across a cheap one or get caught up with my ancients
thank you! i paid under $50, so in my book, that is "cheap." this one, imo, has the best bust in my collection, despite the gash.
I am working on reviews of Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins by Mashall Faintich (McFarland, 2008). The author suggests that the array of dots in each corner could commemorate an eclipse (1279), or another celestial event, such as a conjunction. (They could also represent the Trinity. And they could just fill up space...) Interesting coin anyway. Nice find.
