I am not sure why the coins of L.PAPI, Lucius Papius, are so popular, but they normally bring high prices for a coin series Grueber calls "extensive". Crawford lists 219 different pairs of symbols. I have seen the coins in many auctions, often with several different symbols. I think a good part of the popularity is the gryphon on the reverse. Roman Republican Denarius, Lusius Papius Rome mint, 79 BC Obverse – head of Juno Sospita, R; wearing goat’s skin tied under chin; behind palm tree or flower??; symbol not in Grueber, BMCRR; Crawford, RRC; Sydenham, CRR; or Torino. Reverse – Gryphon galloping right, below poppy seed pod, in ex – L.PAPI. Same comment applies to symbol. 3.70 grams, 17.5 X 18.3 mm oval flan, obverse 9% off center; gVF A similar symbol is on a coin sold by H D Rauch on 9/20/12. Crawford and Grueber note the symbols are related. That makes me think the obverse should be a poppy flower, but the obverse symbol looks like a poppy. What do you think the obverse is? Post your interesting die symbols.
I have seen the symbol pair referred to as Lotus flower and Poppy head Here are a couple of others (not mine). These all come from the same die pair. Here are a few of mine (I have too many L Papius):- Behind head, owl in field, crow with open wings or eagle Symbol variety – RRC 76. Babelon 76. BMCRR 12. Behind head, hunter's net in field, two spears Symbol variety – RRC 19. Babelon 100. BMCRR 19 Behind head, Shoe. in field, Sandal Symbol variety – RRC -. Babelon -. BMCRR -. An unpublished symbol pair with five examples currently known with this likely the best of the five examples. (Richard Schaefer - British Museum)
Nope, I rode the other one instead, inside Hogwarts castle. It was a blast. Had to line up for 3 1/2 hours to get on the ride. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was absolutely packed with humanity that day.
it is the the "Flight of the Hippogriff™Ride at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™" in Universal Orlando Park. I assume Hippogriff and Gryphon are the same thing.
Ah, OK. It's been a while since I've seen any of the Potter films, and then only with a Rifftrax commentary. I think the only difference between the two is a Gryhone has the body of a lion while a Hippogriff would have the body of a horse.
That is a beautiful OP coin as are all the others. I suppose I am like most folks and find these coins desirable; however, I'm embarrassed to say the only one I have has been identified as a fake by our own @maridvnvm. I still am on the hunt for one.
I see no reason why the obverse control mark can't also be a poppy. It looks like a poppy flower, and the reverse is a poppy seed pod.
yeah...it made me sick as hell. but that new griffon coin is a beauty! nice details, cool minor devices...toning looks great ..awesome.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. John McCrae, 1915 after the Second Battle of Ypres
Nice coins maridvnvm! I like to see other examples of coins I plan to bid on. It was nice to find the one that fit mine. You found two more. I tried to make the coin fit Crawford's symbol 130 (Babalon's symbol 29) - Poppy head / Poppy head, but the picture did not match well. Maybe the line drawings are not quite right? I did not see a Lotus Flower / Poppy head listed. PS - symbol 131 is the one I want to go with my Roman Plumb Bob collection.
Fantastic coin(s) and wonderful posts @rrdenarius and @maridvnvm !!! I'm sadly missing any example of L Papius and no other that I recall with 'interesting die symbols'
It's my understanding that the Hippogriff was ½ horse (rear) and ½ bird or eagle (front), while a Griffin was ½ lion (rear) and ½ eagle (front). Close, but not the same.
I believe that yours is Crawford symbol pair 71. Here is my 131 though it isn't in great shape. It goes with my Behind head, crowbar. in field, dolabrum (pickaxe) Symbol variety – RRC 31. Babelon 32 BMCRR 31. CNR 1/07 and my Behind head, Compass in field, Drill Symbol variety – RRC 204. Babelon -. BMCRR - An uneven strike with an off-centre reverse spoils what would otherwise have been a very pleasing coin.
This is also written on a marker at Essex farm in Flanders Belgium. This is where McCrae actually worked. It was very affecting to be there. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in WW I.
Definitely on my bucket list now. Not wanting to derail the thread, sorry RRdenarius, but I plan on collecting a set of coins from all initial combatant countries at the onset of WW1. Here is the first coin I bought for the set. Lest we not forget......... 1914 Austria-Hungry 1 Korona
