My half-asleep mistake coin: A Kyzikos Boar, a Lion, and a Fish

Well, since I bought a new Antoninus Pius today, I figured it did not make sense to keep my mystery purchase so mysterious anymore, so I gave in and opened the package. As you all will recall, that's the coin I bought when half-asleep in front of my computer, and had no recollection buying at all.

So I opened the package and at first thought I was like...."Where's the coin?" After some moments of panic I realized there was a little tiny spec on a corner of the 2x2 flip. It just had to be the coin.

Holy cow, this is small. 9.6mm, it's just under 50% the size of a dime at it's widest point. If I'm honest, I'm glad I got it, but I wish my mistake coin had been a little well...bigger. I was kind of hoping it would have been the Nerva denarius I was looking at so much that very same night...but oh well, it will do.

This has been so difficult to photograph, even my best photo (see below) does not look as great as it does in hand. The coin is simply so small that this is the best I could do. Notice it does have a scratch on the boar, looks like an ancient scratch. It doesn't particularly bother me and it's something that's barely visible in the hand (due to how tiny the coin is).

Nice coin! I have had buyers return $1 gold coins before, because they did not realize how small they are. Seems like these are similar I guess.

 

Size isn't everything.

Yeah, when you first see this coin it challenges your preconceptions of what a coin is supposed to look like size wise. That being said, despite it's tiny size it is beautiful. I have no regrets and I definitely won't be returning it...but I still wish I had accidentally bought the Nerva denarius.

 

It's a great example of the type. I'm not sure why you're seeing it as a mistake. You could have smoother surfaces, but the detail is wonderful.

The mistake is that I didn't mean to actually buy a coin, and I did. Don't get me wrong, it was a good mistake, not a bad one.

I think it's a terrific buy at a decent price and I wonder if you were browsing e-Bay or v-coins when you clicked 'I do' ? Because it looks like one I noticed along with this one I purchased (e-Bay and HHC)---perhaps slightly high for the type and grade at $29.50 shipped: Mysia, Kyzikos, hemiobol, boar and Tunny/lion; 8 mm, .32 grams:

 

it's a nice example of the type with nice details sallent....that was a good mistake!

for me, the size makes them all the cooler, i like little coins.

...and i like big coins.

..and medium coins.

Thank you man. I really appreciate that. Here are a list of my themes/goals at the moment:

1.There are a few more animal types I want...a dog, wolf, dolphin, peacock, and rooster.

2. I also want to finish my Flavian and Good Emperors sets (at least one of each).

3. Also, I want to acquire and put together an aquatic inspired theme set (living in Florida it's only natural to like that.) I could use a few coins with things like ships, sea creatures, sea gods, etc.

Those are my goals for the next year or so. After that I'll probably move on to other themes, but I think I have enough goals there to keep me busy easily for a year or two.

 

LOL, Yep, I'd say you do-----inevitably, you will discover so many examples falling within those goals and themes that it will suprise you maybe as much as it continually surprises me.......I just hope I'm still 'kicking' long enough to accomplish some of mine.

 

Peacock? Most of these have a folded tail like the anonymous quadrans below with Juno obverse. Last I heard these were credited to the Domitian to Pius period.

Steve, as our resident zookeeper, what real animal is the hardest to get? Of course there are always the mythologicals to keep you when you run out of regulars.
