So my uncle recently died and before he did he gave me a lot of coins. Some are from more recent times however many are from the 1800's. I do not know the value of these coins so I was wondering if you guys could help me find out how much I should sell/offer them for. Here is a list of what I have from info I gathered on the net along with the years I have: Liberty Nickels (1883-1912) Mercury Dimes (1927,1928,1936,1941,1942,1944) Walking Liberty Half-Dollar (1942,1944,1945, Eisenhower Dollar Coin (1971,1972) Kennedy Half-Dollar (1963,1964) Ben Franklin Half-Dollar (1951) Buffalo Nickels (1923 i think,1935,1935,1936,1937, one with a missing date) Standing Liberty Quarter (1925,1927,1930) Shield 2 Cent (1864 i have two) Shield Nickel (1882) Barber Head Quarter (1906,1907,1914) Barber Dime (1916) Capped Bust Dime (1834) Indian Head Penny (1885,1895,1897,1898,1899,1906,) Braided Hair Large Cent (1848) Liberty Head "V" Nickel (1912) Three Cent Silver (1865,1869) Seated Liberty Half-Dime (1854) Peace Dollar (1923) Roosevelt Dime (1947,1954,1956,1958,1959,1962,1963,1964,1980,1981,1983) Washington Head Quarters (1950,1956,1959,1964) Jefferson Nickels (1939,1940,1943,1944,1954) Lincoln Pennys (1943 I have three of these) If you know the value of any of these, please let me know. If you think some may be of value and need more info to determine it I can take pictures of the coins in question. Thanks to everyone who helps me out!!
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you got a pretty good collection there. Unfortunatley no one will be able to tell you a whole lot about their value unless they know what kind of condition these coins are in. Most of the dates you listed are coins that are not worth a whole lot if they are well circulated, but could potentially be worth quite a bit if they were in excellent condition. Is there any way you could post some photos?
Wow, pretty nice collection!! The Liberty Nickels, which you have the entire set of is pretty spectacular. The commons of the set are worth 2-3 dollars each. All of the Mercurys are commons and worth about $1.50 each. The Eisenhower are worth face ($1.00) but there are valuable varieties of the 1972. The walking liberty halves are also commons valued at about $7.00 each There were no Kennedys in 1963 so the 1964 is worth 5-7 and if the 1963 is a Franklin than it is worth 7 also. The 51 Franklin is worth 7 also. The Buffalo Nickels are mostly commons and worth 50 cents to $2.00 The Standing Liberties are all common worth about $3.00 each The 1864 two cents have large and small motto versions. The small motto is worth over a hundred each so you would have to research. However, the large mottoes, which you probably have are $20.00 each. $20.00 for the shield nickel I don't really want to list the rest as most are commons. However, I 'd like to mention that Large Cent worth about $18.00, 25-30 dollars for the 1834 dime. Please, I might be interested in some of this, please PM me if you wanted to talk about a deal. I'd recommend a Redbook price guide, that what I used for the above listing. But, please PM me.
You really can't state prices like that without having any idea of the condition of the coins. You essentially gave him prices just slightly above melt for all of the silver coins. And they could be worth alot more if they are high grade, possibly even mint state coins.
I agree completely. We don't know anything about the condition of the coins at this point, so we don't know their values. Let's work on providing useful information, rather than trying to buy the coins.
Thanks for all the replies. I can post some pics, however I am currently away from my home at school so I have to wait until I go this weekend to post the pictures. Many of them are in what I would say alright condition based on the descriptions I got online for the coins. I'll be sure to update this thread once I can get the pics up.
Sorry for your loss of your great uncle. Some good advice has already been provided. Condition is everything. Don't rely on the Red Book for sell or buy pricing. The folks here will give you an honest opinion of value once condition can be determined. You saw the first "offer to buy" I have seen here. Your plan to post some pics and wait the CoinTalkers guidance is a good decision. Posting pics is easy, here is the FAQ on that: http://www.cointalk.com/t8565/ And, Welcome to CoinTalk :thumb:
Agree with the advice given, I am not a dealer in coins, and spend a fair amount of time giving guidance on the value of coins. Posting pictures would be a great start, with the coins you listed condition is probably going to determine value. You have listed a few dates where the mint location is important, so picture or scans of both sides of the coin are necessary. Perhaps this will spark a collecting desire with you.
Most are common coins but if some are in mint condition and have the right mint marks they could be worth something. But as stated without seeing them there's no way to tell but still nice collection and I wouldn't sell them. Bob
