I paid almost that much for a set of President Medals once at a Flea Market...but they had gotten real HOT once and had toned...so that was one reason for buying it.
The other was that to Token Collectors these tokens are cool

On the negative side, this appears to be a product of the "if you make it they will buy it" philosophy of the US Mint and their attempt to be a profit center of the US government.

On the positive side, there are so many people collecting and preserving every coin produced by the Mint these days that it is conceivable that 100 years from now, the medals will be worth more than the coins from this period. It is always the item that nobody saves that becomes the hot collectible of the future. All you have to do is live until 2105 to find out.

Glaciermi,it reminds me of the stuff that was churned out by the Franklin Mint at one stage or another. The Pobjoy Mint in England has jumped onto the bandwagon, especially
with their issues of Manx 'Crown' medal-coins.There's far too many of them to collect. There is one Manx Crown medal-coin that depicts President George Washington. This was issued in 1976 to commemorate the Bicentenary of America's independence.
