Absolutely fell in love with this ASE. It is going into my box with other slabbed treasures. I am curious as to how much I over paid though. I ended up paying $ 225 for this one. It's PCGS MS66 BTW.
    Thanks,

If you're looking to make a profit, you got ripped, but as you said, you fell in love, and that is priceless.

I think you paid way too much, but that is many times the case when someone "falls in love" with something. The falling in love doesn't allow the brain to make a rational choice.

So enjoy your coin. The colors are quite beautiful. But if you really want to add to your toned coins, train yourself to walk away from the coin to think about price. Operate more on thoughtful choice instead of instant attraction.

I'll agree with others in saying that you overpaid, but hey, we've all done it, and it most cases there is no regret :). On the up-side, the coin is very attractive! :thumb:

Darn these ASEs tone fast , must of been in some kind of high sulfur holder . If you're happy with it then the price really doesn't matter . But I think you overpayed also .

I would only comfortably spend about $80-100 on that.

Hmmm - fast ? I've had them tone like that, stored in an Air-Tite, which was stored in a Tupperware, in Utah the second driest state in the nation - in 1 yr.

I'm all the time over paying for coins. I don't think anyone has ever said on cointalk "wow you scored big with that one." I'm still a sucker when it comes to price I guess. On the otherhand it is hard for me to judge the value of a nice tone, and I really loved this one.

I'm starting to think that some people exagerate the price they actually pay for their coins LOL. Otherwise where are you getting them!? I scan all coins on ebay, have top sellers saved, use my greysheet/red book, HA realized prices. Do you all just have years of networking? I feel like the Indian dude off "Office Space" who is looking for a coke dealer.

Yes, a lifetime of it. That is what I mean when I say that you have to establish relationships with trusted and respected dealers, many of them. You let the dealers do the work for you. They will see and run across a thousand times as many coins at you yourself will ever see. They find the deals for you - that's their job ! Certainly you keep looking, you keep studying. But you also have to practice patience, they will find what you want at a price you can afford.

As for over-paying, we are all guilty of that. It's merely a matter of degree. But when you find that coin the speaks to you, that you hear yourself saying WOW ! when you see it. You buy that coin even if it is over-priced. You just don't want to be stupid about it and pay stupid money. As I said, a matter of degree. And that degree will vary with what you can afford.

Take your ASE. Pretty much any ASE in 66 is worth what - melt ? About $30 - and you paid $225. So you paid 7x for the color. Could you afford it ? Apparently so. Was it worth it ? Apparently it was to you. And when it comes right down to it, that's all that matters. You bought the coin because of the joy it gives you, because you like it, love it even. I can think of no better reason to buy a coin ;)

But would you have paid $2000 for it ? I doubt it. You see, even when you love a coin you have your limits. That love is only worth so much. Keep that in mind and you'll do OK ;)

While I agree with others that even in today's toned coin market you probably overpaid....I have done so hundreds of times with no regrets as I don't buy toned coins as an investment and neither did you. Enjoy it for what it is and how the coin appeals to you and not what it's worth ;)

First you are not the only. Not everybody posts what they paid and then not always does everybody rush in an say you over paid. I think it a bunch on some of the coins that are posted - but who am I too judge.

Second if you watch some of the coins that get posted sometimes you can go to heritage and see just exactly how much they paid. Plus some people are just not going to post what they paid for coins and it comes off rude if you jump up and ask how much did you pay. I know one guy who made a $600 blunder - oh wait! That was me, yep - still know him. That is what I lost on the coin and that is what I get for not knowing what I was buying. PS - on the coins I am letting go so far I am averaging a 10% to 15% loss - including the sellers commission and my bonehead buy.

Third if you looked at that toned coin thread that Paul (lehigh) started you will see a lot of coins that they paid way over the normal costs for. Most of them I would not pay that much for. I am not into the kind of toning some others are - so while I might think they over paid they did not for the toned coin market.

Last - nice coin and as Doug said in his last post you like it and that is all that matters.
