Hi, all. For those of you who are in the Detroit area, I'll be setting up at the Northwest Detroit Coin Club spring show, this Sunday (March 29th) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. :high5: This is the club to which I belong. I'll have either a sign on the table that says "Big B Coins", or I'll have some business cards out with my name and website on them. I've visited many coin shows as a collector, and many shows as a vest-pocket dealer, but I've never actually set up a table. I wanted to give it a shot. I went and purchased some neat showcases from a fellow who makes them, bought coin display trays, and priced out some slabs and 2x2s, and I'm ready to go! I'm not going to be too hard on myself if I don't sell a lot, because I've heard many dealers say that business has been slow lately. On the other hand, I think my prices are pretty good, and I have a decent selection. My biggest fear is thieves, but I have my best coins in the showcases, so I think I'm pretty set there. My second-biggest fear is being assigned a table next to a dealer that I already don't like, or one that smells (trust me...it's an issue for a couple of the regular dealers), or a jerk. There aren't too many jerks, but there are a couple of dealers with whom I won't do business for one reason or another, and I'd be bummed to be next to them. I'll post a report shortly after my experience and let you know how it went. Wish me luck, and if you're in the area, come say hi!
Bigtime goodluck !!! I'm headed out for errands but will get with you before the show for sure:secret:
Well, I wasn't going to go, but now I probably will. I'll bring the brass knuckles fors just incase ya need someone to take out the trash. Congrats! Movin on uuuup...
Right on Borgovan!!!!!!!:thumb::thumb: Good luck at your show.. Bring some glade airfreshener in the event things get a little ripe there.
Jack, are you going to be going to the show....boy if I was home I would be there in a hot minute. It is only 40 minutes from my dad's house. Good Luck to you Borgovan, I wish I was able to be there to meet ya and hopefully give you a few pointers. Don't worry about selling coins....if your prices are good people WILL buy. If you overgrade your coins they will not. Simple as that. Good luck and have fun.
Hope you have a great show, Borgovan-- please post a report when it's over. BTW, a little Vick's Vaporub in the nostrils works wonders for the emanations of the hygenically challenged!
Bernard Even the smallest dealer at the smallest show will need a checklist, here a few off the top of my head. Windex and paper towells stapler, flips and 2x2's calculator extra loupe for customers pens and a note pad a generic receipt book a superfine Sharpie lunch bags for customers goods ( the old fashioned brown ones ) small bills and change , for change get up on the right side of the bed edit: spare lightbulbs !!! ( Reveal 60 watters work best) extension cord or two This is a long but good read: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=567319&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coin%20show
Good luck and I want to say I've very impressed that you organized this and I hope you not only learned from the experience, but that you will apply your new skills for many other productive adventures in the future! Ruben
Good luck at your first show Borgovan! I visit Michigan ocasionally on business (Detroit area). Let us hope that we will meet in the future at one of the shows. Eduard
What is it about some people that they have not yet, despite the fact it is the 21st century, discovered the magic of a hot shower and deodorant? Trust me, there are a few coin show attendees at the MSNS shows that are decidedly "ripe" too, to the point of making your eyes water in writhing agonies.
Are you serious? My second-biggest fear is being assigned a table next to a dealer that I already don't like, or one that smells (trust me...it's an issue for a couple of the regular dealers), or a jerk. There aren't too many jerks, but there are a couple of dealers with whom I won't do business for one reason or another, and I'd be bummed to be next to them. If these concerns were #2 on my list I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning. I mean who cares if your next to someone you don't like. Are you there for them are for yourself and you potential customers? Can you really smell others that good? I mean come on it seems as though you are setting yourself up for a very disappointing day. Those concerns or fears would have never entered my mind the first time I set up. I was more concerned with carrying all the stuff in, setting it all up and if any of it selling that day, then getting back home safe and sound - or if I was going to make much money are not. Your comments are a little troubling and petty to me as if you can control weather someone next to you is a "jerk" or not or whether you will or will not "do business with them". Look, you pay your penny and then take your ride. Generally speaking if I project an image of "things may not go my way" then for the most part they won't. If I free myself from any expectations of what might, or will, or could happen my day then goes very smooth.
