I just received my first ever slabbed coin!!

    1993 S Jefferson Nickel
    NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo
    $5

    :)

Numedimedia values them at $20. Is numismedia wrong, or did I get a good deal?

Then again, Numismedia does Deep Cameo, and mine was Ultra Cameo. (I do not know the difference.)

Considering that you can but an entire proof set for almost that amount, and most of those coins would grade 69, I would say you did badly.

Considering that it will cost you about $25 to get that coin slabbed, I would say you did well.

But really, I think the only one who can say if you got a good deal or not is you -- did you value the coin more than $5?

p.s. generally speaking, ultra cameo (NGC) = deep cameo (PCGS)

p.p.s. numismedia tends to not be accurate for moderns. good sources of price data for moderns such as your 1993 proof jefferson is (a) ebay, and (b) teletrade completed auctions.

Thanks for the info. :) And I have no idea if I received a good or bad price! That is why I am asking. I guess Numismedia is not as accurate as I thought! (I had been basing my purchases on it.)

You did good for a slabbed coin. Horrible is it was raw. IMHO the extra expense is worth it for the nice holder.

I will pay 5 bucks for a slabbed coin anyday. Saves me the expense of having it slabbed. which would cost me 4 or 5 times that.

i think its a good deal if you plan on getting a nice graded set of proof jeffersons. or if you are looking to get a graded set of 1993 proofs. also if that year has meaning, like a birth year, anniversary, or something.

either way for $5 in a nice slab, its imo a good deal. it may not be worth much more then that, but definitely not bad. i am not sure anyone would spend over $5 for it, so on a financial purchase, its not going to yield much of a gain.

Thanks for the info everyone. :) I already have it labeled as "My first slab" in the info section of my records. So it has value to me for that very reason. She was my first! :)

I bought my first slab 3 weeks ago. Now I have three, and am about to get a fourth. Suffice to say, I'm addicted.

I have had well over 200 slabs in my personal collection, and I too am a sucker for the $5.00 slabs from NGC or PCGS

Is the reason someone would pay $20 to slab a PF69 ($5 coin) because they were hoping to get back a PF70?

Yep. But sometimes you see slabs where you can't figure out why anyone would ever slab it (like a common wheat in Good condition)

Sentimental? Slab your kids' first wheat they found in change? I could see myself doing it... or hell, gotta do something with those free quarterly submissions, eh?

Good point. I am strongly considering slabbing my Dad's old PR-2 Buffalo Nickel.

If I get a PCGS membership, which I probably will sooner or later, I'm gonna get my first Morgan slabbed... 1885-O in F20 or thereabouts.

It's a fascination I just can't understand. I've been collecting for 38 years and I've never bought a slabbed coin for my coin collection. And I have no intentions of starting.

You know the first time you told me this at a coin show I kinda scoffed. Because if I ever have a slab question I go to you. But once you explained in detail your deep hatred for them... I understood... hahahaha!!

I'm a little slow today...your being sarcastic, right? I was under the impression you were the slab guy.
