I think Die Crack City! The coin appears to be about a VF-25 maybe a VF-30! Nice pickup! I would suggest placing it in another 2x2 as it is currently in a damaged one. Frank
yes the shield nickel is the only type coin i dont have in all the nickels that were released not counting half dismes of course. very nice coin
I'm sorry to say I don't like this one as much as the others. It looks like the surfaces has issues (corroded/cleaned) to me. All IMHO and respectfully submitted...MIke
Typical of shield nickels. LOTS of die cracks. The US Mint was still trying to get used to the hardness of the alloy. BTW, I like extensive die cracks. Personality. Nice coin. If your nickel is anything like my 1882, then there's a LOT more die cracks than are visible in your image. Some of mine are so faint that they're hard to see even under my 10x loupe. But if I work at it I can see it going ALL the way around the obverse with lots of branching.
VF details and a typical Shield Nickel. Don't mean that in a bad way either. Shield Nickels often suffer from corrosion problems and cracked dies. Get a good look at the date as well. Lots of repunched dates in the series. An odd series really. People love the Buffalos and even the V nickels but Shields are so ignored. I like them have about a dozen or so. Now you need a Two Cent Piece to go with it. Keep the shield design theme going.
