Here is a little something I won today. It's not fancy at all, and chances are I'll probably have better Claudius coins in the future, but the price was right and it does take me one step closer towards completion of the 12 Caesars. Plus every good coin deserves a nice home, and she may not be anything shinny and showy, but she's got honest wear and character... something most collectors can appreciate. Anyway, I like it, and that's all that matters. Claudius, 41-54. AE As, 30mm, 10.4g, 7h; Rome, 50-54. TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P Bare head of Claudius to left. Rev. LIBERTAS AVGVSTA / S - C Libertas standing facing, her head turned to right, holding pileus in her right hand and extending her left. BMC 204. BN 230. Cohen 47. RIC 113.
Congrats. Looks great, fun to have! I like it! RI Claudius 41-54 Ae As 28mm LIBERTAS AVGVSTA S-C RIC 100
I bought this Libertas for a similar price as Sallent a few years ago, it's sort of weird patina very thick covering good detail, making it a bit cheaper.
I've alway had a special fondness for 'bronze' and try to get a few examples of all the different denominations....and I really like yours!!! So, I'll throw in one of mine: Claudius. AD 41-54. Æ As (27mm, 10.87 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 41-42. Bare head left / Constantia standing left, raising hand and holding spear. RIC I 95; VF, dark green patina
It's hard to find nice, official mint Claudius bronzes. I predict that one will stay with you for quite a while before you find a suitable upgrade!
nice lookin' AE! my only claudius coin doesn't have his head on it...maybe his hand? Claudius, AE Quadrans , AD 42. O: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG, hand holding scales, PNR in field; R: PON M TR P IMP PP COS II around S C. RIC 91, Cohen 73. 17 mm, 3.2 g.
That is a nice coin @Sallent, my second or third Roman coin was an As of Claudius (with Minerva reverse), sadly I no longer own it. I find his reign one of the most interesting in Roman history. Well done!
I have to say I'm honestly surprised. I figured this coin would not attract much attention at all. I guess I was wrong. I had no idea Claudius bronzes were so popular with the room.
I actually have one on the way to me, saw the one you bought and almost bid, but I don't need them all.
I had to prioritize my bids. It is a very nice coin. Want to see my first as? Nero AD 54-68 Ae as, 28mm, 8.2g, 6h; Rome mint Obv.: IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P with small globe at point of bust Rev.: Victory flying left, holding shield inscribed SPQR
