i have several lrbs i haven't id'd yet and may have one or two of this fellow...i've been meaning to do that for 10 years or so
Procopius is a scarce emperor. He used to be rarer, but the fall of the Iron Curtain led to a flood of late Roman coins from the Balkans that the author of RIC IX had not known about in 1933. Here is a page devoted to coins of Procopius: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/ricix/type7.html That page links to this page of images: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/ricix/type7i.html
Oh, cool, our Procopiuses don't seem to get out much! You can see that I did not choose this one for its reverse...
Here's mine. I was pretty excited to get this coin... it's not the greatest shape but still fun to look at. I love this guy's story and think it would make a great movie. Nothin' left to loose so... let's go all in huh... Procopius AE3. AD 366. D N PROCO-PIVS P F AVG, Diademed bust left, draped & cuirassed REPARTI-O (Chi-Rho) FEL TEMP, Procopius in military attire, standing front, head turned right, holding spear & shield behind left leg & Labarum in right hand SMHB. in ex. Heraclea R2 RIC 7
Nice coin of an emperor I am still missing. Like Valentinian says, coins of Procopius used to be quite scarce - they certainly were when I started collecting romans in the mid 80's. Time to add one to my collection now.
It's much more easy now to find a decent one, than it actually was when I bought this one Procopius, AE3 Heraclea mint D N PROCOPIVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust left.
