OK, so I bought my very first peace dollar ever today, and I must say that I LOVE the design of the coin. I've always heard people on here talk about how great it is, but I just realized today that it's probably my favorite coin to date. Here's the one that I got today - I'd appreciate any feedback on this coin or collecting the set in general.
I have recently got the peace dollar bug myself and I think I will work on a set in 2007, I think it is a much underappriciated coin.
Try to buy the key dates first, they won't get any cheaper anytime soon. It's a nice, short series and the coins can be absolutely gorgeous. Have fun!!:kewl:
Hi, I hope you did not pay 109 dollars for your coin. It has been wiped, or cleaned, without a doubt. If you paid over 30 dollars, then you overpaid, and if you did pay 109, I would not recommend doing business with whoever you bought the coin from anymore.
Steven88, welcome to the "I just got bitten by the Peace Dollar bug family" I got my first 2 this weekend. My biggest problem with Peace dollars had been the nasty destructive toning they can take on. AS for if your coin has been cleaned... I hope it's the quality of the scan/picture. That's my problem, bad pictures.
I'm thinking that the contrast of the scan possibly threw zaneman off a little...I'm sitting here looking at the coin in my hand and it still has a ton of mint luster, but I don't see any hairlines that are typical of a cleaned coin. I'm still fairly new to numismatics, but I know the difference between a cleaned and uncleaned coin - for the most part anyways. I'm no expert on peace dollars (as this is my first one) so there's always the possibility that I'm wrong and zaneman's right.
Congratulations, Steven88. I don't have any advice, but I love the Peace Dollar too. I have two specimens, both 1922, a common date. Both are well struck and beautiful. I think one reason you and I like Peace Dollars so much is they bear the face of a pretty woman on the obverse. The Morgan Dollar's model was an improvement over the matronly, boring women on 19th century coins, but Peace took it a step further and gave us a really good-looking female. I'm sure you know that the model was Teresa De Francisci, wife of the designer, Anthony. Good luck with your collecting.--gunsmoke
Do you know that the Chinese are now making Peace Dollars. It's a fact, I have already seen some of them. You can tell the fakes easily. They weigh different and when you drop them on a table, there is no ring to it. Be careful.
The Peace $ is a relatively easy series to collect. It is relatively short (24), most date & mint marks are relatively inexpensive and the key dates are still reasonably easy to find and obtain. The key dates are also not as expensive as the Morgan $ series. That being said, I do not like the obverse of the peace $. It has a mushy design. I do like the eagle design on the reverse. Your picture is a bit too dark for me to give it a grade.
There are no sharp details, even in MS conditions. I am saying this in comparison to the Morgan $ which has sharp details in uncirculated and higher circulated condition.
Congrats Congrats - welcome to the club I guess it depends on your goals, but if you're looking to accumulate a bunch of peace dollars (like for investment purposes), eBay isn't too terrible of a place. My rule of thumb is to not pay much more than spot price of silver for each one. That lets you get common dates cheaply, and then you can pick the nicest of the lot for your collection. Just a suggestion - I collect them for investment purposes and only recently have I started trying to get a full set. Enjoy!
Having just scrutinized both coins, I see what you mean. And in fact I remember saying to a non-collecting friend sometime back, "Look at the detail in Miss Liberty's cap." However, I think we can appreciate different design styles in numismatic art. I still love the Peace dollar.
Compare any date to the 1921 Peace dollar, use similar grades and you will realize what mushy means. The original design was beautiful and all subsequent years had the relief reduced, thereby taking away much of the beauty of the design (on both the obverse and reverse.) Collect what you like and enjoy. At least with the Peace dollar set you have a good chance to complete the set. (a few better dates but nothing like the prices of the Morgan $ set.) Good luck.
Good purchase. The reason I like the Peace Dollar was the history involved. After WW1, the war to end all wars, the United States was the main reason for the victory. When the artist designed the coin he had the Eagle perched and not flying like it was looking for prey. It was a signal for times of peace. Something I wish we had today. Being a vet I appreciate the flying Eagle but love the perched Eagle.
Peace dollars are great. I have a couple. I'll probably work on the full set someday, that is if I ever finsih Walkers, Jeffersons, and Franklins which I'm working on now. Hard to say if your coin has been cleaned. Its difficult to say when scans are all you have to work with. I have the same problem.
