1935-S certified by PCGS. The first of what I hope will be a complete set of Peace dollars in this particular grade. Should be here tomorrow, I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve!
Looks like a 64 to me, there are some blemishes in key areas but nice coin! How much did set you back?
The obverse is very nice but it looks like the reverse has what looks to be a few bag/wear marks on it. The obverse is REALLY nice though. Are the pictures hiding some luster? I'd say 63-64... ... So the suspense is killing us - what's the grade and what did you steal it for?
I had actually typed MS64 on my computer screen and then I decided to take a look at the close up of the reverse before posting. Glad I did, I am giving it MS63.
I am having trouble with the luster but will give benefit of the doubt. MS64 Obverse/MS63 Reverse. PCGS is tougher on grade, so MS63 net. Nice Peace$. TC
Congrats on your 1st Peace Dollar acquisition. I'd go with '64 too. The obverse looks relatively mark free but there is some "chatter" on the reverse eagle as well as on some of the letters in United States. Barring some of those marks I think she could o' gotten '65. Excellent coin....
You guys are waaaaaaaaay too good at this. CT needs its own holders! It is indeed a PCGS MS64. I paid $432 which is right in line with recent Heritage auction results - maybe even a little under. Certainly well under Numismedia Retail and the PCGS guide (snicker) which are at $563 and $600 respectively. I try to get at least 10-15% under Numismedia Retail if I can so this was well under my target price. More to the point it was one of the nicest MS64s I could find, particularly as several posters noted where the obverse is concerned. Unfortunately I went well over my target price on the 1927 that I picked up today, so on average I'm right where I want to be. It's a beauty (to me) though, and if I'm going to spend years and considerable dollars putting together a complete collection of MS64 Peace dollars I figure I'd better love each and every one of them. Certainly there were cheaper 1927 coins listed on Heritage and a couple of other places, but I could find something I didn't like about all of them.
Preliminary pics of the 1927. Would have liked some bigger pics, but it seems a very strong MS64 to me. I have a 7 day return privilege if it's not as good in hand.
Bit o' acne on the face o' liberty but the reverse looks relatively mark free....... Looks lusterous indeed.
I would say 64 pushing 65, the pitted face, and some bag marks on the reverse are what holds it back from a solid 65, especially with the price difference between the two grades... But i believe it be a good 64 specimen. Nice find as well! Not sure i want to ask, but how much did you pay for that one?
Ermmm....well....$525. The more I think about it, the more I might be making use of that return privilege so that I can look for a specimen that took skincare a little more seriously. Strong strike though.
One thing that I always check.....first thing, is the reverse "Peace". They tend to be weaky washy. The "Peace" on your example looks strong indeed. When you get this please do post pics.
Yeah thats a bit of a premium price (i would have paid $450 or so for it), unless it's slabbed PCGS, NGC, or ANACS... But it's a strong strike and a decent specimen! If you find one in MS-64 slabbed and a non pitted face your probably going to be looking at a price closer to $600-$650. But there's always the option to keep re-submitting for the 65 grade, a $2,800 price increase!
The acne is a bit problematic for an otherwise very nice coin. If you're going to be selective in your MS64 collection then buy the coins that you really like and you won't be disappointed in the future. If you buy a coin for a certain grade collection and one of them keeps on bugging you, then, you might as well sell it and get yourself a nicer one to enjoy and not fret over. Basically, it's called upgrading your set. I seem to keep on doing just that, but haven't gotten around to selling the replaced coins. I've really got to work on that. Bruce
By the way. I'd be proud to own that 27 coin. But it's your's, and you've got to live with it or not. Bruce
