I have waited right up to the end of my first year anniversary. 12/15/10 With membership they provided a coupon for 5 submissions. I filled out the online submission form and have now printed it out. It seems pretty self explanatory at this point. I just need to package and I guess send as registered insured even though the coins will likely come back with Details grading.

I am sending in for both authentication and subsequent slabbing. It would be silly not to insure them, then again I guess some consider these coins worthless? Why wouldn't I insure for 6k? 4 of these were passed down, the 21s is a NEWP Comments appreciated, especially if you spot a fake.

    I am submitting

    1894 Morgan XF - Authenticate - Harsh/improper Cleaning
    1937 D 3 Leg XF - Authenticate - Cleaned
1909 SVDB F-VF Authenticate - Suspect Mintmark (mashed)
1914 D XF - Very old cleaning - fingers crossed!
    1921 S MS64RB - Fingers crossed.

CLICK PICS TWICE for highest resolution.

Personally, I would not include the Morgan with those. I think you would simply be spending money foolishly.

All the cents look good to me, although I cant tell if they are hairlined or not from pictures, but appear authentic. I would drop the morgan as it will hold your group back. A detailes grade wont help that coin. Pick a supper nice coin to lead off the submission even if it holds little value. Great pictures! way to go.

I am by far no professional but I would get a microscope out and check out the mint mark area of that Morgan dollar before sending it in anywhere. slight scratching makes me think someone took an 1894 O or S and filed down the mintmark and coverd it up by scratching the hell outta the whole coin. I appraised a collection once and had an an 1894 with a filed down mintmark... It is just to tempting out there to take a common $50 Morgan and make it a rare $1500 coin....

I agree with the others that you should try to find a nice problem-free coin to replace the Morgan. A details grade is certainly not going to help it, unless you think it will help you sleep better at night.

Great pics! Great coins. I have similar judgement on the Morgan. I see a suspicious nick where the mintmark could be + rough cleaning. Other than that, they appear genuine.

If it is in a slab as genuine - Won't it be worth several hundred $$ of ambien. :)

Viewing it straight on, there does appear a ghosting of a "O" however from an angle, its not there. If I don't run out of steam, I'll switch some lens around and get some microscopic shots of that area. I am thinking about doing a transparent overlay also. However I guess Morgan mintmarks migrate around the same way as Lincolns?

I am confused on why not submit the Morgan. Keep in mind this is a free submission. Is not a genuine one worth something to somebody? I believe have seen certified problem eBay Morgans go for 6-800

Ok........ I need some interpretation from Morgan people.

    Diagnostics:

Obverse diagnostic for a genuine coin (circulation strikes only): large, slanted die polish mark in the right foot of the R in LIBERTY.

Reverse diagnostic for a genuine coin: short, horizontal dash inisde the lower left part of the triangle next to the eagle's right leg.

Anytime you submit a problem coin with ones that aren't, it is easy to assume all the coins in the lot have been messed with and will be looked at closer and or graded lower than normal. Just human nature. Its typical to have entire collections where the owner cleaned all the coins or was sold large lots of processed coins. If you are dead set on getting the morgan graded for authenticity, have it in a group of other scratched coins so it doesn't bring down the nice Lincoln's grades. I know in a perfect world it shouldn't work that way and every coin should be graded on its own surfaces, but from my experience with certification attempts, you have to look at every angle for it to pay off. Its just a personal opinion and strategy.

Thank you for the advice. hmmmmm What if I include the truth? how about I include a note about this being my first submission? That I only joined NGC a year ago after I was layed off and I had time to figure out all the coins that were left to me? That I have a lot more coins but I thought I would start with by submitting the coins that everyone has said I should have checked out?

After all, my membership either expires or renews on the 15th of this month. I have waited until the last minute. Would they toss me a bone or throw me in the dog house?

I wouldn't worry so much about hurting the grades of the other coins but rather that the Morgan may come back as altered mint mark making it not worth anything more then bullion melt value, wasting a submission. If you don't have anything else to submit, then go for it. But if you have anything else worthy of slabbing ( which by looking at the other 4 coins you are submitting you probably do), then I would send a different coin in. I mean just the fact that you can see a "ghosted O" probably means it is a regular 1894 O that they minted 1.7 Million+ of with a filed down mint mark so it appears to be a coin they only made 100K of.

Only way to tell for sure is to submit it. Your call. Good luck!

I got the Premiere Level which included 5 submissions. They send a coupon with the membership package which of course..... I lost.

Okay I decided to ship USPS express since that pretty much guarantees hand to hand delivery and subsequent scanning. I have heard that registered mail can be slow plus I need the coins there before my 1 year anniversary.

NGC has a feature where you can fill out all the forms online and then Print. They require each coin to be put into a non pvc flip with a label (printed from the online submission) and 3 copies of the submission (which are also printed automatically from the online submission) I also included copies email correspondence along with a concern that had been expressed about this type of submission and that since this is my first time, i hope there aren't any problems....... blah blah blah.. :)

Packaged and Weighed everything together and used my USPS click and ship account insured for 5k - cost to ship overnight plus insurance --> $32.15

Ran to the Post Office got there at 5PM - just in time to irritate the already seasonal busy postal workers by demanding them to scan it in now for confirmation of receipt at the Post Office. Good thing most of them know me! They were none to happy when I enter the sorting area from the loading dock... sorry no pics of that!

Good I hope everything works out...

I was pretty worried when I sent in my 5 free submissions - not to mention that my 5 were (4) 2009 $50 Gold Buffalo Proofs and an 09 Ultra High Relief Double eagle so I was nervous as hell just handing them off to a postal worker! :) Keep us posted with the results when you receive them!

If you think about it, nothing is free. Good luck with your submissions though.

Thanks and..... Actually that is a very good point.

The membership for one year was $99
NGC is charging $39 for return shipping and one variety, the 3 legger.
I have $33 in postal fees.

So, the cost so far for submitting 5 coins is roughly at $35 each!

I guess the question is/will be what I could have sold them the way they were and whether they will increase in value when they are slabbed. I believe slabbed coins with Details code actually devalues a coin compared with trying to sell them raw on the bay

Bottom line though, joining the NGC at the premium member level is a wise decision , if one purchases " Raw" coins and will make regular, annual use of that benefit.:thumb:
