I love big European silver crowns with beautiful designs. I have been waiting for long time to get hold of silver 2 ducats. Dutch provincial ducats are mostly struck in gold and silver 2 ducats are rare. These 2 ducats are bigger than usual German 2 thalers at around 56g with same dies as single ducats used but with double thick planchets.
I won mine at last week's long beach auction and it is a silver 2 ducats from the province of Zeeland. It is a ex mount, doesn’t show much sign of the mount and fitted in to my budget. I never buy so called problem coins but this one after many days of thought had to be mine :) There was another problem free 2 silver ducat which sold as three times as much and was out of my range as well as i liked the toning of this one better. I just got shipping notification from Heritage and cant wait until i get hands on the coin.

Zeeland. Provincial 2 Silver Ducats 1748 AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC, Dav-1847. Despite the details assignment, this broad example presents deeply-toned, graphite-gray surfaces and fully-struck details throughout, including the legends. Because of the holder, evidence of the mount removal is hard to discern, but even so, this is an all-around wonderful offering with plenty of allure.

    - but I never owned one of the silver 2 ducats. Can't swear to it but I think they still make them (2 ducats). I know they do the gold.

@doppeltaler that's a great pick up and forget the "Details" grade! So what it was in a mount, it looks great. I can't imagine that thing as jewelry though...56mm! How much does it weigh?

Thanks JWT708. It is suppose to weigh around 56g, yes i thought the same that it is too heavy to wear.
@GDJMSP, thanks for sharing those two coins. I love silver riders. I didnt know they are still making these ducats. Although i primarily collect pre WWI coins, that 2000 Ducat is very enticing.

The older coins are what always appealed to me too, but at the time I was trying to assemble a date set of Netherlands ducats (1586 - present) because to my knowledge no one had ever done it before, and because it would have been a unique set in its own right. Of course to be honest I didn't expect to be able to pull it off either but ya never know unless ya try. The coins in my collection ranged in date from 1595 to 2003. By the time I quit collecting I had a sizable portion of that set completed.

How many millimeters is "double thick"?

    Very good catch...
