My First CBH - 1831 Howdy fellow coin peeps, :thumb: I thought I'd share my first Capped Bust Half with ya'll. It has an "X" scratch on the obverse, which looks really bad in the pic but in hand, it isn't as bad as the pic makes it look. On the reverse, there's looks like a little doubling on the inner left side of th "0" in 50 C. but it may be nothing, however, the "U" in UNITED is weird looking, so I provided an additional pic of that for a better examination by the CBH guru's. :hail: Ribbit
Toad - Looks as though there is some doubling on the date as well. At least the "18". Is that what I am seeing? PS - congrats on your first DBH!
I believe that is an optical illusion (aka: share what you're smoking with the rest of us). :kewl: Here's a couple better pics of the date. Ribbit
Much better now. Still looks like there may be something above the three... but heck, I am the last person that should be commenting on these. Need to wait for Ben to chime in. ...And no, I don't share. Edit: Just saw the upside-down pic... now it looks like there is something around the top of the first "1" in the date??? Must be some good stuff!
I've had the DBH for a bit, it's the camera that's new. The DBH was cheap compared to the camera but I needed it to take photos of my coins with to share on here and so I could sell the ones I don't want on Ebay. I have a lot of coins I haven't photographed yet but I will slowly but surely get them posted. Ribbit
There's actually something going on with the last 1. There's a ridge on the base of that "1" and a "burr" sticking out from the right side of the base also (seeable on both date pics). I see what you see on the first "1" but it's very faint and not enough of a ridge to call doubling but it is interesting. Ribbit
Don't hit-and-run! I was hoping for an explanation from you about the weird looking "U" on the reverse and possible variety hook-up? :hail: Or do I have to wait for the Boner to stop starring at his newest addition? Ribbit Ps: And what's up with the date?
I am thinking it is a O-105. On the O-105 both 1's show signs of recutting. Nothing is up witht he U - that is normal where the letters or stars are draw to the edge.
Gotcha! :hail: The wear has worn it down where the two appear to overlap and give the funny look. What's my best bet on a book covering varieties (with pics)? Ribbit
Great start Toad, "The wind is in the Willows..." Some of my coins have 'extracurricular activity' as well... Deduct 5-10 points and don't worry about it. I'll go along with what Mark (Badger knows all) is saying. I'm too darn lazy today to go get my Overton and try an attribution. the O-105 is a R3 coin though. Take Care Toad Ben
I am using the Parsley United States Early Hold Dollar Varieties 1794 to 1836 fourth edition. In some cases there are so many varieties for the dates even the pictures do not always help. Hopefully Bonedigger has his book and can verify my attribution.
I threatened Mark with the Boner and the Boner came out of its hidding place. Try grabbing that one? Ribbit
I bet if you and Boner ever got together in early fall with your collections, we wouldn't see either of you till spring. Ribbit
