I posted a few weeks ago telling you guys I was going to start a small collection of notes. I finally decided to limit myself to Confederate issues and obsoletes (Philadelphia and New Jersey only). These are the first pieces I've bought, and wanted to post them for you to see. They're not high quality notes but I love the history of them and am really pleased with the four. I just thought I'd share them with you. Thanks for looking. Bruce
Bruce: Very cool notes for your entry to these. Congrats. COAT or GOAT(?) on the $3 is curious and has the feel of a counter-stamp too. All of these notes are new to my eyes and I quite enjoy seeing them.
The scans came out real nice Bruce! I'd still like to find out what the "goat" stamp is. They are ALL really nice notes, thanks for posting them! I'll try to put my coins up tomorrow.
I was curious about the word stamped on the note also. It is "GOAT" as far as I can tell. I asked the dealer I bought it from if he knew what it meant, but he didn't. If anybody has any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing them. The $2 note from North Carolina fits nicely with a $1 I've had for years in my collection. Thanks for all the comments guys. Bruce
Nice additions Bruce. I still marvel at the diverse variety of vignettes, designs, size, and denominations of obsoletes, and older notes.
I'm also impressed with the craftsmanship it took to engrave these vignettes. I'ts one of the most appealing aspects of collecting notes, that and the history that they represent. I started to research the history of the Salem & Philadelphia Manufacturing Co. and found a $1 denomination note for sale on the internet. I'm going to see if I can get ahold of it because it would be a nice companion piece to the one I already have. By the way, I saw a couple of other $3 notes like mine and one had the word "Goat" stamped in red near the same loation as mine. I wonder if this company dealt with other types of farm animals like pigs or cows. Maybe I could collect all the varieties. Bruce
