I just bought a 1920 Pilgrim half for my 7070 type set. This is my first Commem and I don't know allot about grading them. I bought this one from Harlan J. Berk graded MS-63 for $120. I decided I would go with a ship theme for the commems. The other halves I plan to include are 1892 Columbian Expo, 1924 Huguenot-Walloon, and the 1936 Long Island. For the modern I'm going with either the 1992 Columbus or the 2000 Leif Erickson. I have very limited knowledge on buying/grading commems. Any advice or recommended reading would be greatly appreciated.
It appears to have been lightly cleaned. Also $120 is a lot for a non-slabbed Pilgrim for this year. I think Mr. Berks was a little kind to himself with respect to the grade and the price. Other than that is has nice eye appeal, and lots of details.
I looked up some recent auction hammer's for 2008, and PCGS MS 64's had prices at 115, but the BP would probably be another 10-15 bucks...
Nice coin at a fair price. Harlan Berk isn't a discount store, but I've bought from them with no problems.
I buy a lot of coins there paid dearly for some , got some dirt cheap , I know they have someone who grades for them sometimes he's high , sometimes low & sometimes right on , gotta look for the bargains , they will take it back if you're not happy . Nice coin . rzage
I think its a great looking coin, at a descent price. It may have been cleaned lightly sometime in the past, but it doesn't detract from the look of the coin in any way at all. It could also just be the coin, a lot of pilgrims I see have that cleaned look to them for some reason, yet they weren't.
Thanks everybody. This is the second coin I've bought from HJB. I know their coins run on the high side of fair on average, but fair is fair and they have a very good reputation. Plus I liked the look of this coin. It's also my first coin with a die crack. I like it to.
