I am a real collector now. I went out and purchased my first coin. I found a 1909 VDB penny in AU condition for $5.00 so I got it. Not the elusive 1909, but AU was a nice find and the $5.00 price seemed very reasonable. Yay me! hubris
Nice find. Local coin shop? Got a pic? $5 for an '09VDB is good. Especially in AU. I would have no problem paying $5 for a nice '09VDB. -Bobby
Yes, it was from a local shop, which I randomly found in the phone book while driving home from work. I will attempt to post a picture of it when my wife gets back from Green Bay this weekend. She has the digital camera with her.
Great find. Go back there and see what else you can get for such low prices. Of course that's in Wisconsin or I'd get the address from you and go there myself. Last time I went to Wisconsin I ended up married.
You could collect the first coin in each series. If you do that stay away from the standing Liberty Quarter it will set you back $3,000 to 4,000 in just good-4 grade.
By the way hubris, I have an AU/UNC '09vdb and paid more than twice what you did...I think..here it is.
That looks like a very nice and original AU large cent from the photos, although it's tough to be sure with the size of the photos. If he has one as nice, it will be a very good deal...Mike
Hubris, That was a good deal and a nice coin to start a collection with. Welcome to the hobby and hope you will always enjoy it. Ben
