Just got this book in the mail. Half price - a former library book. It was highly recommended by some colonial collectors. Wow! It's like a college science textbook. Way more info than I expected. This is the only coin book I currently have. I'm really into old copper - from US colonials on up through the braided hair series. I must get the eac grading guide soon. Do you know of any must have books for someone new to collecting old copper coins? The Red Book maybe? Thanks. Scott.
I have never browsed that book, but it looks like a good one. I have a copy of the Red Book and recommend it.
It is. It goes on with over 300 pages just like the ones in the pic. It's all about colonial coins and the coins just after the colonial period up til 1792 (I think). I wish I knew of a similar book that covered 1793 - 1857 though.
Any reprints of Sylvester S Crosby book "The Early Coins of America". The originals (1873 -1875) could run you from $1000 and up. I have a 1945 reprint (Limited 500 copies). You can find a most recent reprint (1983) for around $30 and up. I think you would enjoy having a copy !
NEVER....NEVER lose or give away your first book. It's a great book by the way. It is very informative and has a lot of reference. Great choice.
The Bowers' book is excellent, good choice. Another resource is this website, full of useful information... The Coins of Colonial and Early America
It's a very good book, especially compared to the reprints of Miller, Ryder, and Maris books. If you can get used to the brassy yellow images of the coppers. (On the other hand it probably lets you see the details better.) It's one of the books still on my "Need to get" list. The only good book I have on attributing the state coins is one on the NJ's.
