I had planned to go to the coin shop today, but I got there and it was closed. So, I thought what is there better to do with my free day than go check to see if any banks had any halves? The first bank I visited had five rolls and some odd loose halves. At first I bought $30 worth and went and hid (in a parking lot a few blocks away) and looked through them. First roll no silver. Second roll no silver... Third roll two 40%ers! I quickly put two of the loose halves back in the roll and went to my home bank and cashed them in. I went back to the other bank and bought the other two rolls. Roll one had one 40%er and roll two had one also! I threw some more loose halves to replace the silver ones I had picked out and went to another bank and cashed in the two rolls. Something I didn't mention yet is that this bank visit was on the way to the coin shop, because I was passing through the town. I decided from there I would then go on to the coin shop and not visit any more banks, because keep in mind it seems to be VERY hard to even find half dollars in this area. I thought it would be a waste of time to try. So finally I got to the coin shop and saw that it was closed, but I wasn't too bummed out since I already had a good find. I decided to call and visit a few banks in this town before traveling back home. The first bank had no halves at all, the second bank: No halves. Third bank had halves, but only loose ones. The teller pulled them out and examined the date on each before putting it in the pile She said "Sometimes I have to look at them close. *giggle* I ALMOST said "I usually just look at the edges." I got to the fourth bank and they had several halves, but no silver. Fifth bank: No halves. After that I almost pulled in someone's driveway, because I thought their house was a bank... The sixth bank I had to drive around a few times before I could figure out where to go in, because it had about 10 drive-through lanes. I decided not to stop because it was very busy. The seventh bank I visited I got some halves, $5.50 to be exact. I examined them when I got outside, and three were 40%ers! I didn't find any 90%ers, but I figured this wasn't a bad haul at all for my first circulation silver! So, my total purchase of halves was around $80, or 160 halves, and I found a total of 7 40% Silver Halves.
Last month or so I have been doing zilch on halves and quarters. Dimes and nickels seem to be where I find my silver lately.
Good for you! I see you have a coin shop near you. Have you found any coin shows near Saltville. Chris
Still haven't found any coin shows, but I should update my profile, as I live in Marion, VA now. The coin shop is about 30 miles away.
I never get lucky like that. I have more luck finding silver in circulation than anything. Congrats though. I'll try searching next week when I go on vacation up north. Where I am going there's a lot of old banks. Maybe I'll get lucky.
