Today was a pretty good day at the bank. A business deposit came in with a ton of $1 bills so I did the deposit for them. Later, when we slowed down...I went through the $1s (as I always do) to look for stars or anything interesting. I found no stars, but 2 old $1 notes. The first was a series 1963A...and I can't remember the issuing bank...but it was in decent shape. It was circulated but had no tares. Then, I found a note I have been looking for for some time. I know that Barr notes aren't rare by any means, but I have been wanting one...and I really wanted to find one in circulation. Today, I found a 1963B $1 note...and when I saw that date I knew it was a Barr!!! It's a bit beat up and the upper left corner is torn a bit, but for $1 it's totally worth it. It's a San Francisco note. I don't have a pic because I haven't bought it yet, but its in my "save" pile in my teller box so I won't accidentally give it away.
I don't get many Barr notes either. Here's one I found in my change about 6 months ago that went in my "save" pile, too! It looks like it went through the wringer then back again, but hey, it's still a Barr note.
Congrats! I acutally found 4 from the post office at the university I go to. I saved 2 of the best ones and spent the others... which, hindsight, I shouldn't have, lol. edit: and here they are:
After looking at the notes for like 10min I have concluded that Barr is the name of the secretary of the treasury. Are these rare at all? Surely there must be millions of them? EDIT: Well I dunno why I even asked a questions because I knew I'd only go and look it up myself anyway. This guy served for 28 days after some other guy quit. (but you all knew that)
nice find RichieB16!!! i have found a few in circulation, most are in exceptional shape. I swear some kid in the area is spendinghis dads collection lol Oh .. one of the barrs i found was a star note
Yeah, he only served for about a month. That's why they are popular. People at the time were aware that he was only to be in office for a short time and thought the notes would end up being valuable (because they too would only be printed for a short time). So, they were greatly hoarded...as a result are common today in high grades and not really any more valuable than other common $1 notes of the time. But, they are still a loved note to collector's because of their history.
