I got $100 in nickels. What are some key dates or something to look for in nickels? What year were silver nickels? Basically anything of value. Should I expect a skunk with $100 worth of nickels. Just would like some answers before I crack open the first roll.
From 1942 to 1945 some of the nickels were composed of 35% silver. They were called wartime nickels. you can tell these by the mint mark. the mint mark will be on the reverse above the monticello. the key date in this series is 1950 D. with a hundred dollars worth it is not uncommon to find some war times, as nickels are one of the most commonly overlooked piece of modern coinage. another date to look for is 2009. they stopped production early that year(in march i do believe)
Any other key dates? Even if it only brings a small premium? And are their any errors that are common among nickels?
Ordered one earlier this week. Hasn't come yet and i'm certainly not patient enough to wait for it XD
Buffalo,v,and shield nickels are worth more then face. Get a red book and find the key dates than look on eBay to see what there going for.
some more semi-keys 1938 P,D,S 1939 D,S, 1950 D Normally when I roll search I like to keep almost all the ones from the '50 and earlier in good condition. Also of course the silver war nickels, but those were already talked about! Do you have a coin folder to keep a collection? If not they are nice so you can start a Jefferson nickel collection! If you do try to check your album to upgrade to nicer coins! If you have any more questions just ask. Good Luck!!!!! -Zach
Just finished. I got a silver war nickel and 2 buffalos. Gonna go tomorrow and get $500 in dimes. Are dimes a good idea? And should I place an order for half dollars? How much silver do you normally find in a box of dimes or halves on average?
Generally, I have no luck with dimes. i just got done searching $1,000 worth and only found one silver one. but then again, others on the forum seem to do better than me with those. half dollars are pretty good for me. i try to get customer wrapped rolls. occasionally you can get a few silver halves from bank rolled. I have even got some franklin and liberty walking halves from bank rolled halves.
Here are two fairly helpful sites. I enjoy nickels also. Favorite Pres. at least. http://varietynickels.com/ http://www.varietyvista.com/index.htm
Shrake, welcome to the fun of roll searching. Be sure to check the "sticky" in this section. It's the first thread listed in the coin roll searching section. The question you asked is the most common question asked in this section and the answers are there waiting for you I agree about dimes. I did a few to grab some 2009's but unless you take the time for errors you will find in "cherrypickers guide" I don't find much in dimes. You will need the book, way to hard to detail those errors here. You need all the photographs in the book. Good results on that first bag of nicks! good hunting!
