I drove down to Emporia yesterday to meet up with my old boss at a coin auction. Normally, the people in charge of the auction just sell off horses and estates. It was obvious they knew very little about coins. I corrected them on a '76-S Unc Silver Quarter that was labeled proof and the guy tried telling me that all S mint coins are proofs. I didn't have my book to prove him otherwise, so I just moved on. That's like the old geometry explanation about all squares being parallelograms, but not all parallelograms are squares. Except, this time, they were. Oh well, I picked up a decent circulated set of Wartime Jeffersons, a '13-S Lincoln, and a 1928 $2 Note all for $21. I felt pretty good about it. I felt bad for some of the old guys that were buying silver halves at about 15x face, but if it makes them happy... Overall, it was a good experience. I watched an uncirculated 1910-S Half Eagle sell for $400. You could tell the auctioneer was pretty disappointed. If I had the money, I would have gone as far as $750. Anyone have any cool auction experiences to share.
