Went to an Auction last night with the intent to buy some coins if I could get a good deal. The one coin I could not afford was probably the best deal of the night. A 1895-0 Morgan in XF to AU condition went for $350. People were going NUTS over Walking Halves, Franklin Halves, and 2 - 1964 rolls of Kennedy Halves. Mercury Dimes were sold for what I would expect. About ten rolls of wheat's went for $2 a roll (3 rolls had coins back to early 1900's). So I bought 3 things and I think my best deal was not made of metal. First is a token that measures 50mm and appears to be silver plated. It commemorates (350 years after (1970)) the Mayflower sailing from Plymouth on the 6th of Sept. 1620. It's made in England (Edge Inscription), and it has a coat of arms on the reverse that says "Royal Arms of England Under James I". Only paid a couple dollars for it so no matter the value, I was happy - Big Ship . The second is a Morgan 1900-O in VF condition - I think. The toning is dark but not unappealing on Obverse, Liberty is full, hair and feathers are moderately worn, breast feathers are gone. (I'll post pictures later). Paid $11 - I think it was a fair deal. So the best deal of the night for me was a box of books for $11. I had scoped these out during the auction on a large table full of boxes of other junk. This box has 12 old coin books. This is from memory so I may get a couple dates wrong. Three Hardback Blue books: 1960 1963 1965 Seven Hardback Red Books: 1964 1968 1971 1972 1973 1976 1978 1971 - Small paperback Black book (has Ike on the cover) (Cannot remember author/publisher but I think it started with a T or F and was four letters?) 1971 Hardback Book of US Coins by Scott. Seems like a good reference book for older US coins which I did not have one for. All in very good condition with light wear on edges of spines. Let me know how you think I did. - Like I mentioned, I'll post pictures later tonight. Darryl
The old red and Blue books are fun to look at I was looking at a 1975 Red Book today and it had the 1973 Ike silver Proof back then at $20 it was red hot. The strange thing is the mintage of the 1973 silver proof and unc’s were listed in the book at around 2.8 million the newer books have it a little over 1.8 million for both. The other years are also cut in half in the newer books. Either there was a melt down or the books were wrong
That is a good book---from what I can remember, 1971 was the first year printing of that book---I had one given to me by an older collector but have seen these sell for over $40. Speedy
- I cannot wait to tell my wife . Of course her first comment will be - lets sell it . Maybe I'll keep it a secret and just enjoy the fact that I got a good deal... OK - So here are a couple photos of the coins. I know there is a fair amount of wear on the reverse and the toning especially on the reverse is dark. How would you grade it? The mark on the bottom of the obverse going across the coin is on the 2x2 not the coin. Change gears a little - A very nice old lady sitting next to me asked a question after I won the Morgan. "How are you going to clean that?" Before I could answer, she replied "If I had won that I was thinking of using toothpaste on it" :rolling: So no matter what I saved this coin from a scrubbing with a tooth brush and crest toothpaste. My response was "would you refinish an antique piece of furniture". The result is the same - you reduce the value possibly substantially and everyone that looks at it will know it has been refinished. Any info on the token would also be appreciated. De Orc - Maybe you've seen something like it? Thanks Darryl
Hey USS, nice deals you got. It is pretty cool to look back in those books and see the prices rarities like the 1893-S and others were at. Too bad you couldn't get the 95-O, that was a great deal for whoever got it.
Thanks - I was happy and it was a good experience. Ya that 95-o was in much better shape than mine and I think a really good buy. I'll let you be the judge as I grabbed the photo off the web site. The toning was similar and there were two marks on the cheak but the coin was not worn nearly as much. The reverse also looked much better than mine. Everything was much sharper in detail. Best Regards, Darryl
You were right, I went home last night and looked at the cover page and it is the premier release. I did tell my wife and the very first words were "Lets sell it". I love her and know her so well! :smile
