I think it went okay for me this time but realize this was a sucker's bet. I looked at the price guides and looks like I got it for 75% for what they list. Here is the original picture and the coin looks nothing like it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1866-Shield...ZGVpM2SlgrvmNXoN+4L79lk=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
i am curious to how mine is going to turn out it should be here tomorrow. i bought this the second time it was posted and after i asked the seller added more photos. originally it only had the first two and couldnt even tell if it was a quarter or a half. i think it has been cleaned but that it also might be AU http://www.ebay.com/itm/Collectible...ZaMeLNEjAdNY2EltC1WKBo8=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
i am really curious about the rim, perhaps a hair off center? so i am hoping it is real, if not ebay is basically for the buyer now days and not worried
Xf details, no its not off center, its a misaligned die. Though from the pictures cannot tell if its genuine.
yeah i bought it knowing it did not look right and the seller does not usually sell coins. i know it is atleast xf, but figured i can see it hand to see if it hits that AU mark. i wanted it because i have had good luck with bad ebay photos and it had a terrible title. if it is real odds are it is going back on ebay with decent photos to try to flip it
First, and just for future reference, the obverse design is substantially different on the quarter and half. Even in the first listing is was clearly a quarter, so please compare the two and you will see what I mean. At least from what I can see, I would not worry much about it, especially if you're going to try and flip raw since it looks better than what many offer as AU. Even with just quick scans of the photos, I see nothing that really made me question its authenticity. Although a very common date, it looks to be a decent coin, and even if cleaned, this should not take much away from its overall salability.
how different is the obverse? everytime i have looked at seated quarters and halves i see the same thing just larger
I saw that too, the one picture is a quarter. Looks kind of like one I have. I also think that it is cleaned, the fields look different than the around the devices and it appears to been done in a systematic circulation motion like many coins have. Many coins of that age have been cleaned at least once. It is a nice coin, I could tell by the picture. My coin on the other hand look nothing like the picture, which is green and glossy.
on the bright side though you still have a shield nickel for less then ten bucks, if mine comes back worse then thought im out a bit more. and for the price i think thats not a bad nickel. it is a better date having a '66 with rays. you do not see them everyday. i would be happy with that purchase
The best thing to do is compare the two next to each other as the differences will stand out much more. The half is basically (but not exactly) the same as Gobrecht's original design, while the other denominations were redesigned. The easiest way to tell the difference is to look at Liberty's left hand. A finger is raised on the quarter, but not on the half. The facial design is also quite different. Check it out and you will see what I mean.
i do not know how i have never noticed that. on the quarter it is like she is giving a thumbs up while the half is purely holding onto the flag pole
I think it will be fine. The picture is just a little blurry but the coin looks nice. The shield that came was certainly much better than the picture portrayed but I expected that and it is 1866 with rays which is better than the other more common dates but not a key.
Many who are not that familiar with the series miss the differences, so don't feel bad. As for the "flag pole".... look closely.
I looked at the blurry picture and I do see a half on it but the other picture is a quarter. You need to verify with the seller that this is a half. From the first two pics, I would say so.
i did ask and she said it was a quarter. the reverse photo looks like it said half dollar to me which is why i asked for more photos. it was supposed to be here yesterday but the post office a couple hours south west of me had possesion of the coin for about 18 hours, then lastnight it was sent to the post office about 100 miles south of me, now it is at a post office an hour in a half northwest of me. so hopefully today or tomorrow they can narrow it down to my city. ill post it when it comes
Correction: Yes, they are all pictures of a quarter. I just checked my quarters against those of a half and in the quarter liberty gives a thumbs up. I have this same coin in a lower grade. The coin below it is a VF details, cleaned. Your coin is nicer.
Buddy, you are talking about easj3699's coin, right? If so, it is the same coin in all photos, and it is definitely not a half dollar. Look closely.
Yes, I am talking about their coin. I thought it was a half as well but the last three clearer pics are a quarter. Look at the second picture and look closely at what the coin says. The second letter is definitely an "A" and not a "U". From what they said, the first two pictures were posted orginally and nobody bid. Correction: You know what I just looked at my quarters and you are right, Liberty is giving a thumbs up while holding on to the pole but on the half she isn't. That is a quarter in all the pictures.
sorry for the bad photos, it is dark outside so had to do it with artifical light. i think it had the old baking soda cleaning to it years ago but has retoned. i was hoping it would be an AU but think it would be graded xf 45 (if it wasn't cleaned) but overall i think it is a very nice coin and i think the girlfriend is taking it to upgrade hers for her dansco type set
