Picked this coin up at HJB at the end of last week. I've been dreaming about owning one of these for over a decade and income level finally permitted it. Lifetime issue (ca. 336-323 bc); Amphipolis mint; 16.97 grams, Price-5. To me it's perfect in every way except for the small ding on Alexander's/Hercules' chin, but then again this is what permitted me to get it below the auction reserve price in the first place. It would be great to see other Alexander's tets out there.
Very nice, congrats. I still would like a Tet. of this type. I just have a normal drachm though. Alexander The Great, Macedonian Kingdom, (336 - 323 B.C.) AR Drachm Posthumous O: Herakles' head right, clad in Nemean lion scalp headdress tied at neck. R: ΑΛΕΞΑΝ∆ΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, right leg drawn back, eagle in right, long vertical scepter in left, X within Ω left, KH under throne. Mylasa mint 310-300 B.C. 4.1g 16mm Price 2480
They are such wonderful coins to behold! Congrats on reaching your long-anticipated goal! KINGS OF MACEDON, Alexander III AR tetradrachm, 17.14 gm late lifetime issue, struck in Aradus c. 324/3 BCE Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev: BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; I in left field; AP monogram below throne Ref: Price 3325 ex Colosseo Collection (images by Colosseo Collection)
Is that a rainbow next to Zeus's throne? Congratulations on your new Alexander tet. I would not worry much about the mark on his chin. These big coins often have a mark or two here or there.
No, I believe that it's a stern of the ship. Obv: Head of Alexander as Hercules right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rx: AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; stern of ship in left field. Some graffiti in upper left reverse field. Ref: Price-5.
Nice! Sorry to say I do not have a Tet, but I do have this drachm: ALEXANDER III AR Drachm OBVERSE: Head of Herakles right in lionskin headdress REVERSE: ALEXANDROU, Zeus Aetophoros seated left, holding eagle and sceptre. Forepart of Pegasos left in left field, X on W monogram beneath throne Struck at Abydos 325-323 BC 4.2g, 17mm Price 1505
Nice Tet. the mark on the chin doesn't seem too distractive. I don't have any Alexander drachm or tetradrachms yet, its definitely on my to get list.
Very nice. I have a lifetime Alexander stater, but not a lifetime tetradrachm. Mine is a monster - 36mm from the Temnos mint:
Ok, here's mine! Not to brag, but after seeing so many other Alexander tets, I have concluded that the celator who made the dies for mine had to have been a master celator. The guy was clearly very talented. That's not to say others aren't beautiful, because they are, and I've seen some that even surpass mine. But my guy definitely had talent...that's all I'm saying.
Very nice!!! Since selling off my high grade TET and Drachm, all I have now is a modest budget drachm and a bronze as follows...
About 17g, which is pretty standard for a tetradrachm. However the Temnos issues have a flan that is much wider than usual, and the coin isn't as thick.
I grabbed this one in Baltimore last week, Amphipolis mint. I tend to avoid these coins, as lovely as they are (and nice in hand), because demand drives the prices so high. Many collectors who don't collect ancient coins want one of these iconic types, so the buyer base is considerably larger. But I managed to haggle this one down to a very reasonable price. I grade if F+, but it's struck in high relief, and it's only lightly cleaned, with original surfaces. These are perfect coins to pass around for show-and-tell.
You are so cruel. You gave Alexander an F+ ! My 5th Grade Music Teacher gave me an F+ . I could never figger out how to play the Tonette... Makedonon Alexander III 336-323 BC AR Drachm LOL, you would probably PUNISH this guy too...
Nice choice, @MoCKBu4! At some point, everyone needs one of these. Sidon Mint Undated issue, struck under Menon or Menes, circa 332/1-324/3 BC. Price 3475
