My favorite commemorative: 1622 silver

I was just looking at this again today and thought I'd share it with you guys. In 1994, I was still in the hobby (thankfully) and my aunt & uncle went on a cruise vacation. They would occasionally bring me back neat coins from their trips.
That year, they were in the carribean. I don't know what islands they stopped at but they brought back this great commemorative coin they found and gave it to me for Christmas 94'. I've had it ever since but have rarely looked at it, until now.

The silver contained in this commemorative was excavated from the wreck of the Nuestra Senora De Atocha, a Spanish Galleon which sunk in a hurricane off the Florida Keys on Sept. 6, 1622. The wreck was salvaged July 20, 1985.
On the obverse is a picture facing the back of the ship in the hurricane. On the reverse is a picture of the divers, excavating the site. One of them loading a large silver bar into the basket. Also came with a neat COA.

    Here she is:

I was watching a television show on the Atocha and these shareholders were recieving gold chains, gold bars, emeralds, and all sorts of expensive jewelery and collectibles! I hope someday I could go to the Southern Delaware Shore to the Indian River Bay Inlet where you can find copper coins from the Faithful Steward Ship. Has anyone ever tried that?

Any Idea of the value of this piece? I recently was given one.

Hey. I just replied to you in your introductions thread. Mine is just a modern day commemorative minted from some silver bullion from the wreck. Yours appears to be an original 8 reales but I'm really not an expert on those. There have been a lot of replicas made of these so hopefully you got some good paperwork with it. I don't have any idea what one would be worth. Maybe see if you can find a website selling them?

I think that commemorative token is really sweet. I'd love to add one to my collection, thanks for sharing.

Thanks. This was one of the first threads I posted on cointalk. It just got bumped. I wouldn't know where to find another one like it, otherwise I'd point you in the right direction. I got it for Christmas in 94 and stashed it away. I left the hobby shortly after, but I never sold anything. I still have it.

I should have been a little clearer. I recently received this (photos below... it is similar to your, except no COA) and wondered what it's value might be?

It is worth about $10 - the value of the silver.

Oh, you have one too! That's cool. Where did it come from?

I suspect you could get more than $10 for it but probably less than $40. It's just a neat kind of commemorative. It's more of a type of medal. I don't know of any price guide you could look it up in or where to find another one.

Contact the Fischer folks and they'll sell them to you by dozens.
