This is in my top 3 favored coins. I bought this from a neighbor who needed money, in the 80's. I left it packaged as he gave it to me. I would like to know it's worth and I would like to know would it be worth sending off to PCGS or similar rater?

    Thanks for looking.

looks like a 1915 from the pictures! This is a beutifall UNC coin! Coins like this are not worth getting graded, it would be too expensive, but it looks great from pictures! I would have thought it would have risen alot in value if you bought it in the 80's but it doesnt seem like. To me its a 45, mabye 50 dollar piece. But i could be wrong, hope a expert chimes in. Does it have a mintmark? or is it a plain 1913?

And to the experts: is this a matte proof, although I have no idea what a matte proof is besides looking like an UNC piece, I know it has a rough, granular surface as it looks in the picture.

No mint mark, it's plain. The $40 tag was on it when I bought it. I know I didn't pay that amount at the time.

    It's clearly marked 1913 too.

Its just these pictures to me show 1915 pretty well. Try clicking on a picture or holding your mouse above the picture and doing CTRL + on the date and zoom in to see what you think. But I believe it to be worth atleast a bit more than 40, for sure, so if you paid less than that you got a good deal. Just dont expect a dealer to pay you much for that coin if you sel it. Mabye only 60 % of its real value.

You know there are other ways of getting rid of coins, then selling to a dealer? I sell coin I dont want all the time and realize prices in par of greysheet or above.

op, its a nice coin, but rather common as alot of those coins from that year were saved. However for someone to give you a accurate grade, we would need better pictures

agreed. But the many ways to get fair offers is to have access to being a dealer, or coin shop, or coin show table, or Feabay. dont know any better way to get top dollar.

Edit: and those are more complicated.

Once again opening your fly trap on something you have NO clue about!

Bad bat would need a bit better pictures out of its holder.

i'd bet you if the op listed the coin in the forsale section on cointalk for a few bucks under book, it would sell quickly.

and what do you think I dont understand? I understand its value in its MS grade, and was wondering if it was a matte proof, most likely not and whats difference between a regular and a matte. Anything else you have to say?

In xGAJx defence ....The coin did look like a 15 to me too until magnification. I appreciate all the help.....not negativity.

thank you. Do more I look at the first picture, the more im confused! It still looks exactley like a 1915. strange.

The second set of pictures cleared it out for me.

FYI, A matte proof is just that. It is a proof with a matte finish. The proof gets the matte finish because the dies were sand blasted to give it that effect. For the 1913 Buff nickel, as far as proofs were concerned, only matte proof were made, there were no brilliant proofs, which is what most people are familar with.

Now as far as the coin goes, yes it seems to have that matte like appearance, but that coin is certainly not a proof. The strike is no where near up to snuff for what you would expect from a proof. It is a regular business strike. Many of the 1913 T1's have an appearance like that

Indeed Stacey, it's a lovely example, but the value is a victim of the coins own success and presumed rarity.
Since it's a type 1 (with the Bison on mound), it was only made the first year, 1913. When something happens for one year and one year only, it's usually hoarded, and the fact that it's a beautiful design helps :)
You do have some good pictures up now, but it's pretty difficult to pin down an exact grade from any photograph. I'll call it MS, but a numerical grade would require someone beyond my experience level with this series.

It's clearly a 1913 as that was the only year "Five Cents" was on the raised mound...
