So, here's my most recent eBay Bad Pic Score Of The Week. I had seen the below listing, and went looking through the pics. In particular I was looking at the Ike's hoping they were PegLegs, and of course the cent in the '70 set for a possible small date. Could care less about the other 3. However, I wasn't going to drop almost $70 to find out with shipping. So, put it on the watch list, and it ended without bids. Contacted the seller the next day, with an offer of $40 shipped for the lot, figuring at least the melt value of the Ike's and the Kennedy was about $24 and I could fall back on that. Seller and I worked out the deal, and he sent it on its way. So, package arrived this morning, ripped it open. The Ike's were normal, not PegLeg, but I'm pretty sure I scored on a small date '70 cent: Weak strike on LIBERTY, curved "pointy 9" pointing back to the 7 instead of the mint mark, with the tapered edge, and of course the top of the 7 level with the 9 and the 0. So, think it's a small date? Sorry about the pics, just horrible lighting, still working on the setup. And, one of the other proof sets had a Jefferson that appears to be starting some real nice blue-ish toning on it as well, so bonus there too.
Yep, by far that's the best way. I've seen variations with weaker strikes, and even the 7's close to the right position, but the curve and tip of the 9 are usually true.
