    One of the main drivers and themes in collecting was to hold a piece of history belonging to significant historical personalities. One of my earliest when I started collecting some years back was Alexander the Great.. here are those in my collection

    Great coins @Loong Siew
    I love the range of portraits for dear old Alex, from lifetime issues to Roman issues and all the variations in between.

    I'll post a couple of tets with Alex on the obverse, one posthumous and one of Seleukos I Nikator. 20170826_094727.png
    Alexander III AR Tetradrachm, 16.171g, 29.4mm, 0o, Babylon mint, posthumous, 315 - 312 B.C.;
    Obv: head of Herakles right, clad in Nemean Lion scalp headdress tied at neck.
    Rev: BASILEWS ALEXANDROU, Zeus enthroned left, eagle in extended right hand, long scepter vertical behind in left hand, monogram in wreath left, monogram in circle under throne.

    HOWEVER, Alexander aside; it was his FATHER, PHILIP II that built the Makedon state from a ruined country, created a first Nationalized State in Europe, built an incredibly effective Army, and built an incredibly effective Cavalry. He went on to unify most of Greece, pacified Thrace, and mined wealth in Gold and Silver to finance the means to attack and conquer Persia. He started this process BEFORE Alexander III was born, he masterminded unifying Greece when Alexander was too young, and he developed the plans to conquer Persia well before Alexander was mature enough to participate. Philip was cut down too Early.

    With Philip's Plans; Philip's innovative, tried, and seasoned Army and Cavalry; Greece pacified and unified at his back; Thrace pacified behind his back; owning rich mines that Philip acquired that financed the War efforts; Alexander III was able to execute Philip II's plans and conquered Persia.

    THE BRILLIANT MASTERMIND, PHILIP II:

    Wonderful posts everyone!!!

    That's always my most compelling motivation as well----so I'll pile on with my budget examples of a drachm (posthumous) of Alexander and a lifetime Tet of Philip...

    I only have this lifetime tet of Alexander. I really like the janiform vase on the reverse.

    Although I have a tetradrachm I want to show a tiny AE from Kaunos instead.

    Thanks.. the last one is a lifetime issue.. I like that best.. the 3rd is an Odesos issue. Crude imitative but unique in its way
