My dad collected coins, his specialty was large cents, but like all collectors he amassed many other coins besides the ones he was most interested in. He passed away from a stroke this last winter, and left me in charge to administer his estate.
His large cent collection had been sold by his exwife during their divorce, since then his interest was mainly accumulating the state quarters.
every time he went out, he exchanged regular quarters for state quarters, the state quarter program had ended when he passed, it seemed a shame to just turn them over to the bank so we bought 28 books for state quarters, to give them to his grandchildren as a remembrance of him.
The family gathered around a few days before his funeral and we worked on pressing those quarters into books, 6 of us around a table and two people digging through bags of quarters, we spent 3 hours on it before everyone went back to their homes and hotels for the night, but only about a third of the first set of books were filled.
We had the funeral, and afterwards I would go home after work and go through coins pressing those quarters into their slots, some of them were hard to get in, and after a while my fingers and thumbs knew they had been used!
my dad left many other coins, and I have been bitten a bit by the collecting bug, I still am not sure where I will eventually focus my collecting efforts, one thing is for sure though, I will not be collecting state quarters!
