I thought this seemed like a great idea for a thread so I stole it. Crime does not pay. I had almost all the first third typed and accidentally erased it. This time, you get the images and the text will fill in as edits. It requires three posts to comply with the CT limit of ten images per post. While I'm working on the labels, anyone who wishes can play the ID game with the pictures. Selecting coins that are firmly dated and not overlapping centuries made some periods hard. Not having coins of interest in some periods did not help either. I tried to mix it up a bit but someone will be offended because I left out their favorites. 6th century BC Sybaria, Lucania AR Nomos Obv: bull Rev: bull incuse Date: 530-510 BC 5th century BC Athens, Attica AR obol Obv: Athena Rev: owl Date: 480-460 BC? 4th century BC Alexander the Great AR tetradrachm Obv: Herakles Rev: Zeus Date: 334-323 BC 3rd century BC Rome AE Aes Grave sextans Obv: Turtle Rev: wheel Date: 265-242 BC 2nd century BC Pergamum, Eumenes II AR tetradrachm Obv: Philetairos Rev: Athena Date: 197-159 BC 1st century BC C. It will be good for you, Steve. I wish I had included the reasons I selected each one to represent the century but I got lazy. I wish I did not end with three USA coins but I have relatively few others from recent years that are at all attractive. Since I had to remove the only Chinese coin due to a last minute discovered error, I guess I could delete the half dollar in favor of a late cash ... or not. Who is next?

the wire money looks most out of place doesn't it? looks like it should be switched the the elizabeth coin. interesting how the style of stevex Lorraine coins stays very consistant over a long period of time.
Doug, I can't help but think to your choices represent each century extremely well. At least until the 5th century, anyway, beyond which I know virtually nothing about coins and wouldn't be able to say.
That is part of the reason those were chosen. The milled Elizabeth was ahead of her time and, after the experiment, they returned to hammered coins. Russia was really slow to enter the modern era. The last wire was at the beginning of the reign of Peter the Great who made the old ways (like beards - anyone have a beard token?) illegal and switched from medieval wires to round rubles. I could have used a Peter for the next century since he crossed the border but I liked the Mikhail coin better.
