On the front it has the two pillars ( but no waves like most). In the middle row it has the number 2, the next line has "svl", and the last line has either 739 or 139. On the back it has the 4 way cross and in one section it looks like a suit of armor or clothing. the only coin that i have found that even comes close to what it looks like is one from the princess lousia. It is a 2 real coin to my knowledge. It has a 14k gold bezel.
I can't add any information as to the type of coin...but I have seen the "style" of jewerly. Shipwreck coins that have been prepared and sold to "tourists". Often these are legit coins but "low-quality coins" as far as "coin collecting". Better strikes and those with less visiable saltwater "damage" a typically sold as coins. Really bad coins may be melted and sold as metal. Coins with good eye-appeal are often mounted and sold as jewerly. You have a great collector peice. Perhaps one of our more knowledgeable members can ID the coin. Heck, someone may even be able to narrow down a potential source from where the coin was recovered.
It is a Spanish 2 Reale. Very nice, as you said: "and the last line has either 739 or 139. " Thatis the the date: 1739.
Howdy Nicole - Welcome to the Forum !! Sorry to tell you this, but the coin is not genuine - it's a copy.
how can you tell if it is a copy or not?? the only coin we have seen like it was from the princess lousia. it seems to have the same markings on the front the back ones vary a tiny bit
I can tell it's a copy because I have pretty much all of the books on this type of coinage and the design on that coin does not match the design of the genuine coins from the Potosi mint for that year. And Potosi was the only mint still issuing cob style coinage in that year. In 1739 all of the other Spanish colonial mints were issuing this design -
ok if it a copy can you please tell me what it is a copy of. that is what i am trying to figure out. and is it just a copy or is it a fake? we cant even tell what it is a copy of because noone has seen another one exactly like it. thank you for your help
