I posted this message on another group that I am more used to reading, but just wanted to share it with everyone: I guess I am a little proud of finally getting all of this software written -- so I just wanted to share my own personal world coin collection with the forum. I don't know thats there are a whole bunch of really 'exotic' coins in the collection, but I have always been pleased with acquiring them as I go. http://www.kevinludlow.com/coins.html -Kevin
That is a very cool website. I also play guitar and enjoyed listening to your mp3's. Oh yeah, nice coin database. FB
A very iimpressive site Kevin. The ability to sort by different characteristics is really great. Here is the information on your four Japanese coins: #412 - ¥10, Krause No. Y#73a, Showa 50 (1975), 4.5g bronze, 23mm, mintage 1,280,260,000, smooth edge #413 - ¥10, Krause No. Y#73, Showa 30 (1955), 4.5g bronze, 23mm, mintage 123,100,000, reeded edge #420 - ¥1, Krause No. Y#74, Showa 58 (1983), 1g aluminum, 19mm, mintage 1,086,000,000 #421 - 5 sen, Krause No. Y#60a, Showa 17 (1942), 1g aluminum, 19mm, combined mintage 1941-42 478,023,877
Japanese Coins Satootoko, Thanks so much for the Japanese coin listings. I really wasn't expecting anyone to provide me with those! Very nice of you. Oddly enough I was able to translate all of my arabic and hebrew and korean coins. I just couldn't seem to manage the Japanese and Chinese. To Everyone, Thanks for the praise and I am glad that everyone seems to enjoy the database. It is only the first version of it and I am sure I'll be able to make the software much more powerful in the very near future. ...just sort of a hobby of mine =] Thanks again! -Kevin
India Coin I was wondering if someone might be able to help me out with this puzzle... I have this Indian 1/2 Anna in my database: http://www.kevinludlow.com/coins-detail-country-331.html Let me type exactly what the Krause book says about this (coin KM#534b.1) So, first I thought perhaps I was looking at the wrong Krause #, but this is the only one that fits that year and denomination. As you can see from the picture(s), mine is from 1943 and clearly has a dot on each side of 'India'. Problem is that the only coin listed from 1943 in the book says it was minted at Bombay -- but the quote I included specifically suggests that if it WERE from Bombay in 1943, it would NOT have dots. Any thoughts?
What a tremendous database. You have an extremely sellable piece of work there, and you should seriously consider marketing it. I know I'd pay for a copy.
Wow Well I must say the response to my little website database has been rather overwhelming -- both on this forum and on some others I posted it on. I'd like to thank everyone for the support that they have been giving me on the project. And so, to answer a few questions: Yes. I am currently working on a way to make it entirely portable. Thank you very much for the compliment. Actually, while this might sound odd to some people out there, I am most likely just going to make the software free to use. I currently have a number of ideas on how to popularize / market it and will be sure to keep everyone posted on how I manage to do that. -Kevin
ideas Anyone have any specific ideas of things they'd like included in a coin database? Obviously the main coin fields should be available, but anything in particular that one might not expect. I'm entirely open to suggestions. -Kevin
Would you consider making it applicable for U.S. and world currency (and coins)? I'm more of a note man, and would love to be able to throw my foreign & U.S. coins and notes all up on a site like that for my students to be able to browse (I teach). Be nice to also have a way to have a "wants" section (whose entires could be moved over to the "aquired" section as they get aquired heh).
I'm wondering... the site and database format seemed to be Mambo, am I completely wrong? Edit: Doh it is, didn't read the bottom properly
IE Bug Fix I was informed just the other day that many people attempting to view my little coin database in Windows and Internet Explorer were receiving error messages when attempting to view the LARGER images of each coin. Being a Linux/Mozilla guy, I hadn't noticed the problem a'tall - but it has been corrected! Just wanted to post that to anyone who may have tried to view the DB but ultimately had trouble viewing the high-res versions of coins. (the max should be 800 pixels squared of a coin) -Kevin
ideas That is exactly what I was hoping to do. I'd like to make it a collective database for all to use and upload into. I am currently working on modifying the design so that it will fit a generic audience. I will be sure to keep you posted.
Mambo Actually, I think it's a bit confusing to people. But just to clarify, I do NOT run Mambo. Some time ago I 'borrowed' the look of the Mambo site - namely just how the tables are lined out and one of their older color schemes. The software that runs the site, however, is just my own code. On top of that, there are technically NO databases running on the site. I do alot of work with MySQL, but in an effort to prevent my site from being jacked with, I have just written backend software that I run from a shell which creates static pages for me. This also seems to help with end user loading time - drastically. I have a more comprehensive explanation to it in one of my FAQs: http://www.kevinludlow.com/faq-technical.html
