Every day I go to my local bank to get $80 worth of half dollar rolls and today I hit the jackpot! The first 3 rolls I searched through yielded nothing...but on the 4th roll I found 3 silver halves including a 1964! The 5th roll I found another 1964, a BU 1967 and A WALKING LIBERTY HALF!!! The total found are as follows: 2x 1964 2x 1966 3x 1967 2x 1969-D 1x Walking Liberty (date unreadable) All that out of just $80 worth (8 rolls)!!
Thanks guys! This was by far my best day for roll searching yet! Hopefully there are many more to come lol. Here's a pic:
Wow nice. 4 banks near me barely ever have halves. Best I did was a single silver Kennedy and one franklin years ago. I keep grabbing all the $2s (paper) and I just can't bring them back after looking through them even the modern ones. I do better at the SUB SHOP where they keep the bright green $5 and $10s for me.
I'm firmly convinced that the majority of silver found searching halves is a result of theft. I used to think it was people inheriting coins and having the mentality that they are "worthless". Think back to all the things said about baseball cards. But, I find just too many coins that there is no way someone would think they were worth only face value. Just this past week, I found 1981S Proof 1979S Proof 1976S Silver Proof 1971 Proof 1967 Proof (or Special Mint Set I guess) 1966 Proof (same comment as above) 1964 Proof and my best single find of all 1960 Franklin Proof with no noticeable bag marks and only a couple fingerprints that hopefully Acetone will take off. Now tell me, who would break a Franklin Proof out of a case and spend it thinking it was worth only 50¢. But, for someone who's borrowing/stealing from a coin collection (more often than not I bet it's a family member), they may feel safer cashing it in than going to a coin shop where the owner might remember them as the person with $500 in 40% silver. Just a thought.
The rolls I got these coins from came out of the bank's vault. Only one of them is BU, the rest are AU (except for the wl). It is my guess that these coins have been sitting in those rolls for years. The WL is so worn that I doubt it came out of anyone's collection. If it was BU however, there would be little doubt in my mind. The bank I get them from has been operating in the same building since 1895. It would be awesome if they had some really old rolls stashed away in the vault somewhere.
Did you check to see if there is any mintmark on the Walker? PRobably won't mean much since you can't see the date, but be neat. Very awesome! You are doing good with these halves. Very nice job DJ! :thumb: Phoenix
Thanks pheonix. I was dumping out the roll on my desk and when that walker fell out I was very surprised. Bet I don't find another one of those for a long time!
DJCoins, go back to the bank and buy the rest of the rolls, especially the ones out of the same box. You will probably be pleasantly surprised. I've been searching rolls for quite some time and I order them by the box. Virtually everything I find is recently wrapped as evidenced by both the dates on the box and the fact that there are frequently 2004-2005 coins in there too. I find that there are usually just a couple random silver coins, or the entire box is good. Rarely do I get a box where only a couple of rolls have such a good find and nothing in the other 45 rolls. So I say it again, go back and buy the rest of those rolls
