Recently I got a whole lot of silver for face value. After carefully going through it all, here is the stuff I am keeping for sure Better dates/mintmarks, semi-key and key coins, and the best condition coins. Unfortunately, most of the better dates are not the better condition coins, with the exception of the seated liberty quarter. Start with the best pieces - can anyone help me estimate grades? Sorry - not exactly something I have a knack for. 1921 peace dollar: 1857 seated liberty quarter (sorry, it auto-rotated when I uploaded, cannot figure out how to rotate it back): 2x 1943/2P overdate: 1921 mercury dime: 1895S morgan dollar:
Here's some more of the better quarters, kept aside because of dates and/or condition: 4x washington kept because of great condition: 2x type-1 dateless 1917 standing liberty: 2x SL kept because they are the only 2 with dates: out of almost 150 barbers, these include the best condition ones, as well as any better dates. None were in any actual nice condition, unfortunately:
Here are some halves: These walking liberties look great: again, this includes the best condition barbers as well as better dates. And again, none of them are very good condition, even so: 3 commemorative halves: Some brilliant looking 40% kennedies. These are gorgeous: This 1965 kennedy is on a 90% silver planchet:
Here are the dimes I kept: The single seated liberty. She's in terrible shape, but I'll keep her for now: This time, the barbers are a bit better condition. Especially the 4 I took an additional picture of - can read the full "liberty" and everything: For mercs, I pretty much just kept everything that looked brand new. These ones are all from the 40s, but the condition is outstanding: And I kept a bunch of roosies - some are toned/stained like the 2 on the left, others are blast-white like the 2 on the right. All are pretty much new. No important dates though:
And finally, here are some of the dollar coins I kept - as always, these are the best condition and the better dates:
Make sure it is by looking at the edge as well as weighing it as per here: http://coinsite.com/1965-kennedy-half-minted-in-90-percent-silver/ If it's legit 90% silver, then please do send it to a TPG to get certified. Now the real question is - how the heck did you get all these for face value???????
I have edge pics, I just didn't post them because of the 10 photo limit per post. I will post them in a bit once I get back on the computer instead of this tablet. It weighs about .435 ounces. I took it to my friend at the post office to weigh because I do not have a scale.
And I posted in a separate thread a few days back how I got them. Basically, someone was dumping a collection in a coinstar and I stopped them and made friends. Check the other thread for more details.
Love the walkers, gotta be my favorite mint issued coin of all time, everyone raves about the obv but the rev is very underrated in my opinion. And if that 65 half is 90% id say u struck gold. I've only been collecting for 3 yrs but in my time in the hobby I've never heard of any 90% 65s. Definitely keep us posted on that, I'm interested to hear what you discover concerning that coin
The 1921 Peace dollar looks like XF details to me, but harshly cleaned. Can you list date AND mintmark for those Morgans you posted (besides the 1895-S)? Good finds, but you knew that already...
The first step with the 1965 half is to weigh it on an accurate gram scale, preferably comparing it to several other 40% and 90% half-dollars. (With the confusion between troy and standard ounces, a single weight in ounces isn't useful.) It's not possible to tell just from checking the edge color -- because of the way the metal moves during striking, it's possible to get an edge that looks like "solid silver". I don't mean to rain on your parade, but "when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras" -- and a 1965 90% would be closer to "unicorn", not "zebra".
by the way your example of your 1942P 3 over 2 is one of the best examples I've seen. I always wanted one and go to coin shows, If I can't see the error I don't buy it.
both of those nickels are examples. The one with the closeup is the stronger one. Hold on, I have the pics I took of both I think... the second one is weaker, but it is definitely there.
OK, I thought it was amazing that you got the collection at face, and bravo, great find! But now that you are showing us some of the gems?!!! wow. You really landed a whale. Thanks for sharing your pics and the great find!
