Ok so I went to the bank today to see if my favorite teller and currency hook-up had anything new. She said to hang on to the new 5's because the government is recalling them due to some of them are series 2006 with the old design. The way I understand it is since the Secretary didn't change they don't add a letter. Ex: 2006A. I didn't think much of it until she said they have been told NOT to give them out and put aside the new 5's that come in. ??????
That teller, and the head teller at that branch, don't know much about money. In fact, the BEP just printed 76,800,000 series 2006 colored $5s in May. See here: http://www.bep.treas.gov/section.cfm/2/431/633 This is a rumor that has spread around many times, and has constantly and consistently been debunked.
The United States has never recalled currency. In fact, the only time that coins minted or printed by the Mint or the BEP has been made not valid currency was with the trade dollar. The BEP has changed how series are printed before. It doesn't really mean anything. It was not a mistake. This rumour started out in an e-mail (remember the e-mails about dollar coins not having the national motto on them?) and has no factual base. Your bank is severly misinformed. Just don't worry about it.
yeah i have to say that teller doenst know what they are talking about. i work at a bank and know for a fact it is bs. so no need to hold onto those 5's. unless they are stars:smile
Add this one to the rumours about the Massachusetts quarter getting recalled because of that big bad gun etc.
I found a thread I can reference when people post that they are going to ask their bank because they think they know better.
