Lately i have been picking up raw Ikes for two or three bucks at local coin shops and antique stores. I started this thread because i dont want to keep posting a new thread each time, just want some opions on some pick ups. I have a pretty good collection of slabbed high grade ikes for comparison and would like to hone my skills on possibly cherry picking a high grade Ike for cheap. So here are my two for today after scouring most of southern New Hampshire. Im gonna say slight chance at MS65 due to luster but not sure? Could be 64 or even 63 on both.
I may be a little tough in Ikes, so I apologize if I offend. I think both are AU, and the first one might not even grade due to the scratch on the reverse. However, I have pulled Ikes straight from mint sets that look they had been in circulation. It is possible they could get up to an MS 62. Is your color off a little? Are they more silver with a little more luster?
Yes i take my photos unfortunately with an old lamp and a bad camera. As far as AU no way i have other ikes like i said already slabbed and yes that is a particularly a bad scratch on the reverse of the 77.
Take a look at this and compare yours to the 64's. http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Ike/Grades Either way, I like them.
Heres a new pic of the reverse i think the lighting glorified the scratch a little... The 77 is much nicer has less distracting marks its definitely the winner for today. They both have better luster than my slabbed MS65s but more chatter on the face and fields. IMO the 71-D with so many distracting marks is not a keeper and is probably a pretty common find i would put it in MS63 possibly lower. The 77 is in better shape and has great luster but with said scratch on reverse and chatter on obverse i would say a shot at MS64 and long shot at MS65. I paid like three dollars for the pair so im happy either way just wanted to share. More will be coming soon hopefully in better shape.
Last minute bid on Ebay because the auction was ending in seconds and i miss read the auction title, i thought i was bidding on a 1971-P plus the listing photos were not the same coin. You roll the dice and you win some and you lose more. Honestly though for $3 shipped i think it actually cost the seller money. As for the grade i dont even have a guess, A strong strike with good luster but some dings on the obverse and scratch on reverse would keep this in the low grades. Will end up i a 2x2 and probably given away in a contest.
