Since we're nearly done with 2019 i've decided to establish a top 10, though it's hard for me to choose which one i like better! 1. Transylvania taler, 1592, Sigismund Bathory. I've recently explained on the world crowns topic why i'm so thrilled of finally having a piece like this so i won't waste your time any longer! 2.1669 Saxe-Gotha wedding taler of Frederick and Magdalena Sybilla of Weissenfels . Absolutely stunning design, i love the style of the legend , i'm simply trying to imagine how amazing a wedding like this must have been! 3.1657 TI Bremen taler. Large, seldom seen , like most of the Bremen issues of that period, very imposing imperial double-headed eagle and two badass lions holding the key of the city! 4.1764 E Prussia taler. Very hard to find and a real catch for what i've paid for it, minted in Kaliningrad/Koenigsberg, plus the name Frederic the Great speaks for itself! 5. 1693 Hungary taler, Kremnitz mint. A huge coin, much bigger than the Hall issue and of course, the emperor himself, Leopold I Hogmouth, the jaw and the Battle of Vienna! A must have for a talers collector! 6.1708 Piastra, Papal States/Ferrara. Can't say i know anything about Pope Clement XI, but the popular St.George slaying the dragon theme, more common with Mansfeld talers or english crowns, made me say yes! 7.1697 Hohenlohe taler. First of all, GFN, Georg Friedrich Nürnberger, the mintmaster, he has his name on some awesome and rare pieces issued in/for Nurnberg, Hohenlohe, Bamberg, very collectible for the right pocket! Then we have Wolfgang Julius, Count of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein, who fought in the Balkans and eventually became a Field Marshal in the Imperial Army! 8 & 9 .1717 Austria taler, Vienna mint/ 1721 Austria taler, Hall mint. A tough choice for me as i'm still unsure of which bust is more impressive, Leopold I, Joseph I or Charles VI? Most likely the answer is Joseph I and next year i'm going to get one! 10. Last but not least, 1621 Erfurt taler, NGC Top PoP , interesting piece, unsold at a recent auction, so i decided to 'save' it and bring it home! 2020 wishlist: Erfurt Purimtaler, it's the priority of the year! Francesco de Medici piastra Cosimo II de Medici tallero Braunschweig-Wolfenbutel 'Wildman' taler Leopold I 2 taler If anyone wishes to share his top 10 or wishlist, feel free to do so!This being said i wish you a great 2020, numismatics wise and not only!
Very nice additions. All of those would suit my collecting style as well. I have not pulled the trigger on a Hogmouth Thaler yet despite the desire to have one. Her is my Erfurt Thaler. Without a doubt, one of my favorite pieces.
Recently saw this type at a past Kunker sale and i like it a lot! Do get a Leopold I, Kremnitz mint, trust me, it's a great coin to have, especially in a high grade!
I think I have to say that #10 is my favorite. I think the Leopold I has the best obverse/reverse of the three. We just recently studied Friedrich der Große in my military history course. Fascinating leader and time to be in Europe! Great addition Also, that's the only Thaler I've seen from Transylvania, very cool! Thanks for sharing these awesome coins.
Those are amazing coins Paul Tudor! I love German States/ Holy Roman Empire/ have a deep fascination for Transylvanian AV coinage. Here is my Hohenlohe/ Hungary/ Transylvania AV Dukaten soory about poor fotos. I have my topten posted earlier in December under "panzerman" top 10 2019. I have top 20 posted in ancients forum too
Well done in these purchases! My #2 claimed to have only 747 minted! 1669. GERMAN STATES. Saxe-New-Gotha. Ernst I Taler. Obv: Bride and groom hold hands under a dove and the divine glory, Hebrew lettering of Jehovah, with rays descending on marriage of Ernst's son Frederick and Magdalena Sybilla of Weissenfels. Rev: 12-line inscription. KM-25; DAV-7449; Schnee 425; Steguweit 22. Extremely rare, Krause notes a mintage of just 747 pieces. Lovely olive and gold toning. NGC MS-62.
Thank you very much !I already knew that you have this piece before buying mine!I tend to believe the mintage number is accurate since it was struck to celebrate a special event, there's also the 1671 one with 700 minted!
Many thanks panzerman !I've seen your coins and i have to say they're just amazing, so congrats! That Hohenlohe ducat is one great looking coin!
I like that Leopold piece a lot, it's so big! My transylvanian taler is a decent issue of that era, but you should check talerman's 4 taler of Michael Apafi, that's a real monster!
