I have been a regular at the U S Mint since 1959. 2019 represents 60 years. I just terminated (de-activated) all my subscriptions. The mint is putting too many products into the market. They are primarily enhancements of regular issue products; enhances, reverse proof, different packaging, etc. I will spend the rest of my time enhancing my collection by upgrading and new storage and presentation methods. I will trade my surplus for better grades and filling holes. I will still be around on CT. This is the best thing to happen to coin collecting. Happy New Year.

Happy New Year to you. It makes sense to me. I'm glad with the actions taken over the past almost 2 decades to reinvigorate the hobby, but I must admit that all the bundling and coining for the sake of coining has been too much for me (to each their own, so not disparaging any of you enthusiasts that enjoy the coining for the sake of coining as I put it). I think it's the overly business-like mentality that sours me. I see enough of that already...I'd rather coin collecting be an adjunct to the coining for currency. I know: I'm a bit of a bummer.

Happy New Year, Inspector.... I been coin collecting since the 1960’s and have my share of US Mint issues. All acquired via the secondary market until this year when I went all in for the Apollo commemoratives. I have to say that I have been rather astonished by the sheer volume of offerings put out by the mint. I am with you, Inspector. It is overwhelming. I would rather see a few well crafted offerings than a glut of mediocre and even unattractive pieces.

Happy New Year to you, Randy. My wife and I were going down the list in the Red Book - Issue Price vs Current Value. If I find something I want it would make more sense to let prices settle and get it on the secondary market. Most stuff I have isn't worth what I paid for it. Peace to you and your family.

Couldn't agree more, Inspector43. I used to buy proof sets regularly, but gave up on them a number of years ago.

    Happy New Year.

Thanks Bruce. It is too bad that in order to maintain a "set" you have to buy 4 or 5 variations of a coin and its packaging.

Happy New Year and Peace to you and your family.

I don’t mean to hijack Inspectors thread. But that Liberty nickel in your avatar takes my breath away. I know it is a proof strike and it appears flawless. I sure hope to see you feature that one in a thread soon.

@Kevin Mader @Randy Abercrombie Am I seeing it correctly? It looks like 1882 to these old eyes. Is it a specimen?

Nice I'm with @Randy Abercrombie on this. I would like to know the story. My collecting started with my aunt giving me an 1885 nickel in 1948. That set is my favorite.

Sadly gentlemen, it’s the one that got away. The story behind it is that the LCS I frequent know I appreciate Variety and Error coins and while this isn’t either, it’s an oddity they knew I would enjoy. Like you, it’s an absolute stunner in my books. And as a frosty proof, the details jump out at you! But I had choices to make and I sprung on some traditional coins instead (1877, 1909S VDB). It was an expensive coin...and despite that I do have regrets. Luckily I took a couple pictures.

Simply put: it’s a beautiful coin!
