I want this contest to be helpful to all members, so....

If you want to enter you need to post something that will be informative for the CoinTalk audience. This could be anything from link(s) to sites that are useful, information that you have collected, hobby info/secrets, etc.

At the end I will decide what my favorite post is, winner will recieve a handful of coins which I will scan and post later tonight. Contest will end Sept 5th at 7pm pacific. Depending on if there are any in depth posts/links I might need a couple days to pick a winner.

I will try and be fair when picking a winner, the fact that my focus right now is on currency and specifically National Currency shouldn't decide the winner. ;) What am I saying, it could (especially if it led to me finding bills I can afford).

    Good luck!

Don't have any nickels but here is a 44 penny, dime, quarter, and half. Prizes might all go to one person or be split to have 2 winners.

  6. Well, www.wikipeda.org always gave me good information :) seriously though, coincollecting.wikia.com is a great site that I use a lot. Very informative and helped me look up coins I found in my grandfather's attic. A lot of info on world coins.

;) I actually saw this contest right after it was posted and before the second post showing the prizes, but I decided to opt out because of the subjective nature in which a winner would be determined.

If I had to offer a resource per the context of the contest, and following in the footsteps of being dubbed, "Mr. Goggle", it would be: Google. Not nearly enough people start there before posting here! The CT Advanced Search tool isn't consulted nearly as much as it ought to be either for that matter, a tremendous resource... now, many gripe that the CT search feature is hard to sort through. Fair enough, but let me lend you this bit of wisdom, take your search to Goolge and enter your keywords PLUS the key word 'CoinTalk' and you can sort hits on CoinTalk Google style! Best of both worlds. :thumb:

When running pennies through the Ryedale I find it helpful to first sort through the rolls when opening them and sort out corroded pennies and ones with gunk on them that may jam the machine, wheats, Indians, and foreign coins. After doing this I find that I get almost no jams, it is also helpful to put a 1/4 inch book under the back of the Ryedale so gravity helps them through the chute. I may edit this and add stuff later but for now here are some links.

Well, for non US coin lovers, my favorite drool worthy site, and you can actually buy them, (hate sites with just pretty coins you cannot buy):

    http://www.cngcoins.com/

    My favorite coin information site:

    http://www.grifterrec.com/coins/coins.html

This site is run by a great guy who helped me a lot getting into ancient coins. Tom is a heck of a guy and I would love to shake his hand one day.

There are many others, but those are visited most often, (besides this site). I wish everyone luck with the contest. 1944 holds a place in my heart, as it is my mothers birth year, and I assembled a really nice MS65+ set of coins for her of that year a while ago. I hope she never spent them. :)

I will try and be fair when picking the winner, I also collect coins so am just as interested in those informative sites. I will probably have one winner for paper and one for coin. Even if someone doesn't want to enter the contest I would hope that they would still list any helpful information that they know.

It's okay. It's your contest and you get to make the rules. I chose to opt out of this one but still gave a recommend. :thumb:

PS: there is an older paper money thread where I posted a whole bunch of GREAT currency links... just have to search to find them. ;)

I have seen the currency thread, I don't think I have gotten through all of the site though. (yet)

One of my favorite sites to use is ebay (Gasp!) I pick a general category such as "US coins", I then get rid of things such as copies, novelty bills, and holders. By searching through random items I sometimes find something I have never seen before. I then use google to find out more about the item.

Recently I came across a beautiful bill I had never seen before (nicknamed a porthole), opening bid was really low so I started to research it. By the time I learned more about it the bid was over $1000. There was a reason I hadn't seen it before...

www.coinflation.com is very helpful with scrap value on junk silver and regular coins. There is even Canadian stuff on here.

Well, it dosen't take a rocket scientist to know that http://www.cointalk.com is the most informative site around.

There were many interesting sites to look at, not easy to pick a winner. One problem I had is that I don't have any collection or knowledge regarding foreign coins and currency. It was hard to even start to rate a site when I didn't even know the denominations of the money. I thank everyone for sharing and I am sure that each site will be a future reference for at least a few people who viewed this thread.

I think cointalk is a great answer, but I think cointalk viewers have already found it.

I have used donckelly and coinflation before and find them useful (and used the kelly site again, yeash).

    but...

In the end one single site I keep coming back to, maybe because of the "what could have been"
    http://www.uspatterns.com/
Come on, we ended up with the SBA dollar and we could have had that?

Congrats to coinmaster1, pm me an address and I will send the coins on their way.
