I was going through my cash drawer here at the shop yesterday and I came across this note. I have a friend who works for Brinks (who also happens to collect currency) and he happened to be standing here when I found it. It's definitely a genuine note. He told me that the banks mark these bills mutilated because some vending machines do not accept these bills. They are returned to the FED and shredded. So imagine my surprise when I found this in the cash drawer. Once marked they aren't supposed to get back into circulation... or if they do the next bank that handles them culls them out.
Is that "MUTILATED" stamp in some special UV type ink? or could anyone fake that? Can you test your note under a (real) black light? If it 'glows' like the ink they cancel postage stamps with I'd say its real. I suppose this is just a scan and the ink had no reaction to the scanner. Curious. Neat find for sure.
Matt, Cool Find, I am not really sure what I am doing, but I hope this works. <a href="http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy351/reiljj00/My%20Currency/?action=view¤t=IMG-3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy351/reiljj00/My Currency/IMG-3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy351/reiljj00/My Currency/?action=view¤t=IMG_0001-2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy351/reiljj00/My Currency/IMG_0001-2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> These should be pics of some that I have also. If this doesn't work, I will have to try another way later.
you don't need the href tags, just use img code in brackets [] then place the image's url then close /img in brackets []
Thanks Krispy, I have no idea what I am doing on a computer, but I learn a little more each day. Thanks for doing what you did. John
These bills have me stumped. They dont really fall into any particular genre of collecting. Not to sound like I am downing your neat find but I really cant see how it could carry any premium over face. I am no expert in an entirety but I will qualify myself by telling you that I have been into collecting for 20 years. I have sold my collections a couple of times but I always pay attention to the hobby. SO anyway if these were collectible everyone and their brother would buy a rubber stamp and you would see a hefy influx of these. Cool note to come accross though.
I couldn't find any on completed auctions at eBay, but then I don't know what to search for besides the obvious terms: mutilated, stamped, destroy and paired that with denominations that might have it. Would like to know more if you figure it out...
My wife works at a bank and that is how I came into them. So, I only paid face value for them. I like to collect consecutive #'s so that is why I kept them. She brings home old money for me all the time, and usually no matter what I keep them. These she said one of the tellers thought they were fake, so sent them to the secret service, who stamped them. the reverses have stamps also and in pen the word "genuine". From what she said they were supposed to get sent to the Fed, in exchange for "new money", but she traded them instead with "my money". Not that anyone really cares, I thought it might interest someone. Thanks for listening. John
