I am a one who must be organized in everything in my life. So.. I have been sorting my collection by date, mintmark, denomination. I have been putting, [mostly the silver] coins in a maylar holder. But now I think I would like to put them in a folder or album for each (pennies, dimes, nickels, etc) to keep them all together and to keep track of what I still need to complete the collection. What is the least expensive folder/album? Which will also hold the coins in maylars? I would like to keep each denomination seperate that will hold all mintmarks for each coin. How do you all hold you coins? Images and links would be helpful. Advice aprecitated. Thanks.
ONLY hold your coins by the rim (or edge)...if you don't fingerprints will show soon...this happens on BU coins so if the coins are cirulated this shouldn't happen but I would be safe than sorry. The Folders are the cheapest but Non PVC flips look great!! Speedy
All my nicer coins go in 2x2s or air tites, as for any others i want to keep i sort them by mint and type and keep them in tubes.
Do you collect uncirculated coins or even XF grade? If so - then ya don't want to use an album. Storing well circulated and worn coins in an album is fine. But the higher grade coins will be at the risk of damage in an album. Just think for a second - how do get the coins into an album ? You have to press them down into the hole. This act alone will either leave fingerprints or marks and hairline scratches on the coin assuming a piece of cloth on top of the coin while you press it into the album. Then you have to worry about slide marks from the mylar covers. I'm afraid standard albums are not the way to go if you wish to preserve the condition of your coins.
If I'm lucky. Sometimes the hole isn't round and I have to pound them in with a jack-hammer. Not good; tends to wake the neighbors at night. The folder I have the most trouble with is my wife's state quarters map folder. I usually have to file off the coin edges to get those to fit.
Actually GD, the majority of my coins are from circulatation. As for grades, I have not learned how to grade my coins yet. Those that I have, [that look 'pretty', 'shiney' and 'silver'] are in 2x2's holders. I do have a few uncirculated that came encapculed. So those I won't have to do much of anything. (except store them in one place) Right now, I have a box with all circulated coins. Each US denomination [seperated by year] and World coin are in an envelope [seperated by country]. I don't believe they are 'worth anything now, but maybe in 50 years or so. The reason I ask is wherever I add to the collection (from circulation) I have to [example: Lincoln's wheats] research them to see what I still need to complete the series. To me this is troublsome...constant handling of the coins. [from what I have learned here, try not to handle coins] Would like to be able to see what is still needed at 'first glance' without having to touch them all the time. Thanks for your help.
The I might suggest that you go to this link - JP's Corner See on the left where it says 3 Ring Notebook Pages - click on that. There you will find a product that will allow you to see all of your coins at a glance while they are safely held in 2x2's, flips or even Air-Tite holders. It pretty much works for anything.
You joke about it, but I think there are quite a few Lincoln cents that I banged into my albums with heavens-knows-what when I was in my early teens. It's awful to think about, but I doubt I had anything valuable to begin with. I keep my 2x2s in 3-ring slide protector sleeves from the office supply store. I use decent quality "archival acid-free" ones. Anyone have any thoughts on those?
Just my pocket change collection (and the wife's state quarters). My better stuff all goes into Air-Tites.
I remember how pretty Tarn-X made my Wheat and Indian Head pennies. That Tarn X sure does make them clean. Even better than an SOS pad.
