Am I right in thinking that the 2009 Washington Territories 2009 Quarter is the only US coin to depict a musician on it, that being Duke Ellington? Otherwise, the 1936 D Commemorative Half Dollar Cincinnati Music Center and the Tennessee 2002 Country Music State Quarter seem to be it for music references that I can find. Anyone know of any others?
Thanks. As you say though, not a coin. Seems like we're missing an opportunity here? Look at stamps, Elvis, Ray Charles, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Hendrix, love em all, though it is kind of a drug addict series...
Nice, but modified stuff is not for me. Or is that US Mint issue? I didn't think there were any official colorized US coins. I don't really even like the colorized foreign mint issues much. Hobo nickels are kinda cute, though. But tooled stuff in general? Nah.
Thomas Jefferson was a talented amateur violinist. There are probably some musical depictions on the reverses of the First Ladies series. The Kentucky quarter shows the mansion where Stephen Foster wrote one of his most famous songs, "My Old Kentucky Home."
How about these? They're not music themed, per se, but they depict music in one way or another. Pics from the 'net. 1935 Hudson, NY Commemorative half dollar, there's a wind instrument being used by that mythical creature. 1995 Civil War Gold $5: And, not a US mint struck coin, but still collectible - there are various hobo nickels with music themes.
^ Just to be clear about the Hobo nickel... obviously it was struck by the US mint. I mean that the Hobo nickel's designs weren't struck by the Mint, though I'm sure you already know that.
