Seeing these types of errors sold at coin shows I have at times asked the experts selling them as what is their take on how it got out of the mint. They usually respond that Mint directors or managers and supervisors take them, move them to their offices for show and tell, and then they are removed from the premises. You need a certain level of authority to take these types of errors out.
Charmy the Penny Lady has a few more on her website for sale I want to share this webpage with you - http://pennylady.net/coinsforsale/errors.html
She specializes in cents and certainly has "inside" contacts with many dealers. Why would see need an inside contact for material like that to be presented to her consistently especially since she has a private error cent collection
But the ? still remains, how does something like that get out of the mint? How does a nail struck on a dime get out of the building?
Someone either walked it out or it got into a bag. Its not different than rodent parts sometimes getting served in fast food restaurants. When you make billions of things a year freak things happen.
Why would anyone want an error like this, it is apparently an error that is stolen from the mint and has no way to ever reach the general public in any way. I thought errors were errors by escaping the mint by accident.
Understandable..different collectors have their own views and opinions on this subject. Honestly I would love to own something similar because I find it fascinating! We see items like these owned by a lot of the major expert Error Coin collectors. For me if it left the Mint accidently or not it's still an error but I ask that you please don't judge me for my feelings about the subject
Because they like it, or find it interesting, or want it ect. Really all the matters is the end product. How anything actually got made or snuck out is nothing more than guesses until someone produces a video of what actually happened and there won't be any videos coming forward.
I guess, I personally wouldn't want something that was snuck out because that takes the fun out of it for me. Wouldn't it be a crime to own one that was stolen from the mint? I know if I buy a gun that was stolen it is considered receiving stolen property here.
Short answer maybe. There is a very long and very inconsistent history about how the government has dealt with things that were never supposed to get out.
